Default CAI and the seasons...

I heard that its not good for your car if you have a CAI and you live in a cold region.

Is this true?

I was thinking about getting one but when winter comes around where I live it gets pretty cold.

What do you guys think/know?

Does it get to sub 100 weather where you are? You'll be fine. The only worry you should have is do you have a bypass or some other way to protect the filter from water and other contaminents which could make their way into your engin and cause problems.

After all, it's a cold air intake system. Air Temp doesn't have much to do with it.

^^^

Having a CAI in the winter time will be a non-issue, if anything it helps. The colder the air, the denser it is = more power. Look at it this way, no matter what temp it is outside it's still no where as cold as say if you were to use nitrous.

A bypass essentially negates the already minimal gains of a CAI. Air under pressure (or vacuum) behaves as a fluid, following the path of least resistance. As soon as the cone filter at the end of your CAI begins to get dirty at all, or the CFM draw exceeds the filter's ability, the bypass will allow air through. Eliminating any gains of the CAI's tuned pipe design.

The difference in intake temps between a short ram and a full CAI are generally within 2-3º F. Negligible. There's really no reason to have the filter way down there in the fenderwell. Look at any race car-- they don't care where the filter is, so long as it can pull the CFM they need. 1% power +/- due to intake temps doesn't mean a damn thing.

In other words, be safe, get the WeaponR Secret Weapon. No need for a bypass valve.

Well, if the Weapon R could manage to swing CARB approval, I'd say sure. But $240 for about 18" of aluminum tubing that is technicallly illegal to install and will at best provide a handful of HP up near the top of the band?

I'll wait for the "next best thing", thanks.
