Default CAI, SHORT-RAM, WHATEVER...What is the long term?

I was wondering...since the filters on most CAI are made to allow more air, it also allows more dirt...so is there a long term effect of having a CAI over a stock air box? I would assumer more dirt = the need for more frequent oil changes, and possibly a shorter engine life?

Some of the guys in the Porsche club ran some tests with
K&N filterchargers and found that they did indeed allow more
dirt in.

But I say that in a public forum and I get beaten up for it.

People are almost as nutty about air filters as they are about oil brands.

it does allow more dirt and air.... but no long term effect that i know of. i've never heard of a cai or sri allowing too much dirt in that caused engine failure or shortened the engine life.

Yes, they do allow more dirt in. My recomendation is to change your oil at 3000 miles and not 5,000. If your ****, you can do it earlier.

Is the extra dirt enough to harm the engine? I doubt it. The particles that come through an air filter are pretty insignificant.

ive heard the same thing about them allowing more air and dirt into the engine. i personally know my roomate has has his gsr since 99 bought it brand new and with in 150 miles he had an AEM cold air put on. At 135000 miles no problems yet. atleast nothing that would be realted to dirt getting into the engine

I was just curious, since I don't have much experience with tuning and modding and am still learning about the pro's and cons of everything.

Good info, thanks everyone.

Just keep reading forums and learn as much as you can... I am like you, i don't know much about automotives, but as i kept reading forums i started to learn and understand more. Also i met other fellow SL members to help me install my mods, and they were nice enough to explain a lot of things to me.
