Default Car Starting Problems/ Key Problems?

Hi, I have a 2005 tC that I have recently been experiencing problems with. The car just doesn't want to start sometimes. I checked everything, just put in new spark plugs, new battery, starter is good. It cranks over but it just won't start all the time. I thought it might be my fuel pump or fuel filter so I got those replaced and the problem is still occurring. I brought it back to the shop and they plugged their code reader in it and said it was some type of security code. They were talking about possible replacement of the key or the transponder key amplifier. The key that I have is not the original it is a Toyota replacement that looks fairly worn. Could this be the issue? Also I checked all my fuses and relays and those are also good. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Could be that the chip in the key isn't programmed to your car. You'd need Toyota to do that if you want any chance of starting the car.

Ok so before I was able to get a replacement key I was driving to work and the car shut off on me. I was driving like normal on the highway and it shut off abruptly, it didn't sputter and die as if I were to stall it, but all the electronics were working except no power steering. I don't know how to fix this problem please help me out.

Weird. Engine cut off, but all electricals stayed on? I would say that the ecu doesn't recognize the key, but the fact that you were driving it says otherwise. Are you sure there aren't any mechanical problems?

Its in the shop right now but they aren't really sure where to start. I was thinking that it may be the crankshaft position sensor or the maf sensor but the car only has 106k on it and It only shows some symptoms of those sensors. I guess I just don't know where to start and I can't afford to keep replacing stuff that might fix it you know. Also there is now cel light but they plugged in some code reader anyway and said that there was some sort of security code issue?

But yes all the electrical stayed on, I didn't realize the car shut off until I hit the gas and there was no power.

Honestly, you should take it to the dealer. Doubt any local shop will be able to help.
