clutch advice please
So I'm looking to replace my clutch with a clutchmasters stage 1 and just keep the stock flywheel and resurface it. Everything enginewise is stock. Is that a good option with the clutchmasters stage 1? and is resurfacing the fly wheel a good option or should i replace it? also does an aftermarket clutch hurt the tranny?
First things first, i see alot of people replacing clutches, some think it gives you more hp, blah blah, here is pretty much how i figure if i need an upgraded clutch:
if your factory one NEVER EVER slips, there is ABSOLUTELY NO reason to upgrade. period. that is my personal opinion, and of course, is arguable. but ive had many tuner cars, and hardly ever replaced the clutch unless your pushing tons of hp over stock (causing it to slip), and/or the clutch is old/worn (again, causing it to slip).
the only way the aftermarket clutch would hurt your tranny if you dump the clutch, it WILL put more force on the moving parts inside, compared to the stock one that may slip and prevent so much sudden force on the internals of your tranny. if your not pushing huge amounts of hp, i wouldnt worry about it. i dont think these trannys are easy to break.
you can use the factory flywheel, but you may want to think about putting in an aftermarket flywheel now, while your replacing the clutch, and not have to resurface your factory one. all an aftermarket flywheel does is reduce some reciprocating weight, resulting in slightly faster engine revs.
its all depending on your plans down the road, and of course, like always, your BUDGET! lol good luck

why are you replacing your clutch? is your current one slipping and needing replacement? unless your preparing the car for a turbo kit and need the additional holding power, or have a clutch that is wearing out, it is pretty pointless to upgrade the clutch.
and if your going turbo, you'd need something more like a stage 3 or 4 clutch depending on how much power you plan on making.
also, changing the clutch is a great time to throw in a few other upgrades, like stainless steel clutchlines, lightweight flywheel (the stock one is uber heavy) and if you have the money, a limited slip differential.

stage 1 will be fine for a stock tc.. its prolly cost less than factory replacement not sure.. resurfacing the flywheel will be fine, no need to change to lightweight flywheel if your not really looking for performace or racing.. it will just hurt drivability a bit
