Default Damn, changing flywheel and clutch is ____'n hard!

Damn, I didn't expect changing the flywheel and clutch was going to be this hard. I had to take off so many things to get access to the tranny. I thought this was another easy, half day clutch job like my hondas in the past, but its not!!! I expected to have it done in one day, but had to call in work sick to finish the job! The hardest part was removing all the parts out of the way, especially the heavy ___ front suspension crossmember sub-assy. After everything is out of the way, it was back to a regular easy flywheel and clutch job. Word of advice to anyone who wants to tackle this job on their own the service manual on scionlife is very helpful!!! I wished I had the extra money to get lsd too, because this labor is worth doing everything at once. Lsd is definetly going in with the next tranny change. I installed the competition clutch light flywheel and Act street clutch. Here are some pics, so enjoy guys!!!

My engine supported by the crane.

Tranny finally off after taking out everything!

Heavy ___ front suspension crossmember sub- assy.

My old flywheel, clutch disc, and pressure plate with over 120k miles on them!

My new flywheel, clutch disc, and pressure plate with 0k miles on them!

You see the nice light flywheel!!!

Now you dont!!!

You should only have to lower the subframe on its bolts a bit and only partially remove the crossmember (swing it out of the way) to do it. But yes, it will take a bit to do

Here is a great writeup on it.. although you have your own now :D

hey krazy thanks for posting pics. How exactly does the clutch disc, pressure late and the alignment tool relate with each other? Or is it self explainatory when im actually installing it?

The pressure plate/clutch disk sit on the flywheel (like a big sandwhich). The alignment tool is slid into the holes in them to align them perfectly, so that when you put it all together the shaft lines up. You tighten the bolts that hold the clutch in and then remove the alignment tool.

cool thanks for the answer. i didnt know the tool is suppose to fit in the center of the flywheel too. im gonna go piece mine together and play around with it. So the cluth disc doesnt screw into anything, right? im thinking it just sits on the shaft which is what the alignment it suppose to represent.

Its pretty simple man, just make sure you have the flywheel torqued down to spec which was 72 ft. lbs and the pressure plate to 14 ft. lbs. The alignment tool was pretty sloppy when you align it through the disc and flywheel. I didn't like it because you could still slightly move the disc when the tool was all the way through (it may just be my kit though). Just make sure you check to see if the disc is centered between the flywheel and pressure plate with the alignment tool through them before you torque down the pressure plate. Other than that, it was a piece of cake. Like you said, it is pretty much self explainatory once you have the tranny cracked open and doing the install. Hardest part was getting everything out of the way to get to the tranny, but it sure does paying about 16hrs of labor at $95 an hour!!!. This project to me was a lot harder than my turbo install, so good luck! You will also learn more about your car also!!! Have fun! Feel free to ask me any questions!

The tool is suppose to represent the shaft, so if the disc is not align right, the shaft will have a hard time going through. The tool did not touch the flywheel at all, it just goes through the center and fits in a slot at the crankshaft. It does fit through the disc tightly though. You'll see when you do it!

Man, the car feels great. I think it feels better than new with the new clutch. Its a toyota, so its meant to last. Still boost'n with miles and its still hold'n up. I'll pretty much drive the heck out of it until I need to rebuild with better parts and boost higher!!! lol. I personally think its a great car despite many haters.

Hell ya, hondas have to be the car of our era. They are so easy to work on and easy to make them quick. Only problem I had was with my H22a, that was a krazy setup with that atts unit.
