Default Dare ya to touch your header after driving it. Ok.

So I pop open my hood after driving it, and then I realize my header is extremely hot. Now I don't know what compelled me, but I put on some mechanics gloves and I go to touch my DC header, and immediately it starts to burn the glove. It didn't burn a hole, I was ok, but I thought it was a funny experience I'd like to share.

On that note, anybody ever wrap their DC header in heat wrap? If so got any pics? If you don't about how much wrap did you use? 25 ft? 50 ft? I sure as hell don't know, did a search but didn't really find anything there. k I'm done bye.

My brother and me where a car meet about 2 weeks and and it was about a 25 min drive there. We popped our hoods when we got there and some dude came right and put his finger on the turbo heat blanket....haha. That was funny. I felt bad for the guy but c'mon.

Back in high school, my friend thought a DC header thats ceramic wont get hot. And so he grabbed it with his bare hand, we all heard the burnt hist sound came from his hand, and he just screamed "aahhhhh, fuuuuuucl<!!!!" LOL. dumbass.

But i do have a DEI wrapped around my turbonetics downpipe. I wrapped 3 layers of it on the whole downpipe. It makes a lot of difference in the engine compartment. but still hot when touched.

i know there are two grades of jet hot - one that keeps more heat in then the other. well - im wondering - if ya keep too much heat in it will crack the header easier. Anyway - which grade jet hot should be used?

the wrap works...but it won't keep it cold, just a little cooler than be4. It will still burn the crap out of ur hand if u again feel compelled to touch it after driving

most likely need 50 ft, depending on how tight you wrap...i bought a pack for my intake(and that actually worked...i'll get a pic up later...keeps intake cool from the engine) and i am going to use the leftover for the header, to help keep heat out

50ft to do a standard 4-2-1 header. Not sure about the DC, cause it's a 4-1 and there's more surface area to wrap.

Heat wrap keeps the heat in the header, and out of the engine bay. Hot exhaust flows faster and more efficiently, which is why header wraps work. They get the exhaust moving. They also help reduce underhood temps. But on the tC, your intake sits right by the head, so the heat wrap won't help reduce intake temperatures. Wrap the intake - it'll help more than wrapping the header.

or in my case, do both

but yeah the intake wrapping really does work...mine is temporarily zip tied in place..anyone know whats the best way to hold that stuff on????I know zip ties wont last on the header

worst case scenario, fab up a heat shield!!(but that would probably be hard to do to a ceramic coated header

I had a header, turbo manifold, and a downpipe coated by a company called Swaintech and it looked great. Within 15 minutes of shutting the cars down you could touch the pipes without serious burns. Check it out.

hahaha - without "serious" burns. Just those minor, inconvenient burns. lol - that's funny for some reason.

I wrapped my intake tonight - it took 30 minutes max, and I used 50ft of it, with a nice dosage of re-wrap where the intake is closer to the engine. It looks good. Although, I love the rough, tuner look. Primer black paint, wrapped intakes, stripped interiors. It all gets my blood pumping.

The intake wrap will also get rid of heat-induced power fatigue. You ever notice that the longer you drive, the less powerful your car seems to get? It's because that intake pipe gets super hot being so close to the engine. The hot pipe steals any benefit of cold air. I paid $30 for 100ft of wrap. A highly recommended investment. I'll post pics someday.

wow that wrap was cheap...mine was $40 for 50ft.....but i only used like 10 ft, it was thick and i only did the upper pipe(not sure if you did the whole thing), but it worked irregardless...now as soon as i get my header i'll wrap it as well

I was wondering if you guys could help shed some light on something for me. I don't have a header on my car yet, so I can't find ut first hand. But I've been told headers get hot after running the engine for a while. Is this actually true, or were those guys just pulling my leg?

Well no sh*t it gets hot, thats why I put on some gloves. When I popped open the hood, the heat was incredible, you could just feel it standing there. Did I know that it was hot enough to burn my mechanics glove? No, but now I do. That's all it was. Always some wise ___ have to share their lame sh*t with you. This was directed to the 40 year old with a midlife crisis. Everyone else seems cool.
