Does the L-2-3-D on an auto tC actually work when racing?
for what kind of racing?
in autocross, it might be better to just put it in L or 2, but for drag racing, just put it in D.
it isn't a manumatic transmission, and you'll actually make the car slower trying to shift up the gear selector since under full throttle, the car will only upshift at the best time.

Back in the cold war a russian once told me that he blew his transmission each time he tried to cross the border. He told me what he exactly did. He put it into 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th then into R. I asked him wtf why you put it into R? He told me duh... its the rocket booster.
no...keep it in drive the only time you will need to use those lower gears if your townig something or driving in bad weather or the drive doesnt work other then that its not any faster and can hurt the tranny...if you want to shift get a manual....
I don't think he is asking about "manually" shifting through the gears.
I think he's asking which would make for a quicker car during a rolling start.
1. Dropping it to a lower gear then flooring it. This way the a/t doesn't have to waste time downshifting since you "manually" did it.
2. Keeping it in D then flooring it, which means the a/t spends time downshifting.
I wouldn't recommend messing with an auto.
You'll eventually have to replace it if you abuse it.
Upgrade the torque converter if you want more out of your auto, but I don't know if there are upgrades available for tCs.
