Not calling b.s., but I do believe a parking brake is federally mandated and can even serve a purpose on an automatic for parking on very steep hills.
And I also do believe that a Nissan technician got sued along with his dealership for writing a fix on a work order and calling it an emergency brake then the customer used the lever thinking it will help them in an emergency and actually got severely hurt.
Not to mention its hard calling a brake that locks up the rear wheels and causes the car to generally loose control as an emergency brake.

You'll still need it to bring the car to a complete stop unless you want to coast to a stop. You down shift to slow down but after that, you still got around 3000 lbs on wheels.
Brakes can fail. You just need to be unlucky. Unlikely, yeah, but it happened to a friend of mine.
I'm not saying it should be an "emergency" brake because clearly, it'll cause more harm than good in an 80 mph "emergency." People should just know what it does and how it does it and be wise about the whole affair (just like people should know how to use the spare tire, how to change oil, where the tow hooks are, etc.)
For the record, I call it an "E brake" because "parking brake" takes too long and "P brake" sounds like something you gotta do when someone catches you marking territory.
