Hi guys

Do any of you here on SL cleaned engine bay?? Mine after this winter looks like it's over 10 years old soo i was wondering if there is a safe way to wash/clean the whole engine. I live in chicago area and if there is anyone from out here that did it with no problems later on let me know where it can be done...

I'm in the same situation. If someone could post a DIY with pics, that would be awesome!

 

here's what I do... let the engine cool completely, spray with a citrus based cleaner, or greased lightning, let it sit for about 10-15 minutes, then spray it off.... let it sit for about an hour or 2 to make sure everything is dry. then I wipe down anything I missed, shine up my hoses and such.

 

I just spray mine out when i go to the car wash and then touch up anything i miss when I get home.

I was told Simple Green is good to clean your engine bay.

Anyways, yeah a lot of people are scared because of all of the goodies under the hood. If you have the car anything but stock then you may want to look at covering certain areas with plastic bags first ... but just spray with a degreaser of your choice let sit for 10mins or more and spray that ish down.

So fresh and so clean clean!

shouldn't you have to watch out for your alternator or isn't there something you should cover or are all you really just spraying the entire engine down? Is there any spot I might want to watch out for? I have pretty much a stock tc right now.

 

simple green ftw.the engine was made to be pressure washed,if its stock.

 

I was about to search for engine bay cleaning, but the thread was right here staring at me! Bizarre.

The things I'd be worried about would be battery and alternator, and then any special intake stuff. Then again, all of the stock items in the engine bay are designed to resist occasional splashing from rainy day driving (of course, excluding the intake inlet in front of the driver's side wheel well, but that's guarded with a splash guard, right?).

This winter only dirtied up my engine a little so a wet rag will work for now but later down the line I guess I'll have to try spraying it down. But I gotta say no matter what you guys say I am gonna be so nervous taking a hose to my engine pay , I just feel like that isnt right lol.

 

im gonna go pick up some simple green.....ill try it out

 

well first off whatever you end up using(simple green) make sure and try to keep it off the outside of fenders and what not when spraying . not that it hurts the paint but does tend to strip the wax off pretty well.
secondly when i do my engine bay after spraying it down with simple green i take my wash mitt and do the jams and things that are easy to get to .then the underside of the hood. and then go to town with the hose....
theni would blow it all pretty dry with either the air compresser or a leaf blower, watch the rubber seal on the bottom of the wiper cowl though....
