What does it sound like when someone has engine bearing problems? If you have such problems do you always hear it? ....if not ... when would you hear it?

So the fact that my car plays "Frosty the Snowman" everytime I start it up is bad?

To answer your question.. it all depends honestly on the level of damage your talking about. I had my bearing spun and egg-shaped when my engine screwed up. The noise I heard was kinda like a metal on metal tap. It wasn't some sporatic tapping either.. it was in sync with the RPM's.. the faster the RPM's, the faster the ticking.. but it was evenly spaced. I heard my noise obviously only when it was under some sorta load. I'd give it a little bit of gas during idle, and let it tick away.

Hopefully that was a little bit more elaborate for you. Why are you askin though? You have issues?

 

could also sound like a whine/whistle but it'd probably seize before you'd hear it... not many bearings will last if they're making metal/metal contact at all...

 

Exactly, thats why I said the sound may vary. Mine was metal on metal since it was so far along.

 

The bearings (in case you havent seen them before) look like shims. They are not the ball bearing type setup many think of when they think of bearings. They are thin peices that are curved to fit between the rod and crank. Oil provides the cushion.

If a bearing is wearing over time, you will begin to hear a slight tick. This will gradually get worse over time until it becomes more of a knock. Once the knock gets bad enough you will disntinctly hear a "double knock" which is the knock when the rod bottoms out and when it starts upward again. A worn bearing under normal circumstances is going to happen at very high mileage and can take a long time to get worse.

If a bearing spins, it effectively blocks the oil passage, thus stopping oiling. This will turn into a bad knock very fast.

You really arent going to hear a "squealing" noise from a rod or main bearing. If it is dry of oil it will destroy itself and knock like hell very quickly.

Now, if your knock is on the crank it will be at engine speed. If it is valvetrain noise it will occur at half engine speed.

 

Indeed... the main journal bearings at my work (2 halves) make about a 9" diameter... BIG ENGINES!!

 

I have a whining noise that happens when I drive. Is that what it might be? Also what causes this problem? I noticed it a month after I got my ZPI V2 crank pulley.

 

Your belt most likely Give it a little bit, it'll go away.

 

That was three months ago. Should I worry or did somebody supercharge me when I wasn't looking. HAHAHA

 

Its definitely not a bearing. If it was you would hear "tic tic tic tic" or soon thereafter "knock knock knock" and the "knocka knocka knocka: eventually leading to "blap blap bang!" then the noise will go away completely Sounds like either a belt (if it is a squeak) or the power steering pump if it is a whine.

 

when i put an alt pulley on my rolla it sounded like it was supercharged. it is prolly the belt. funny story i raced a 04 civic with intake and exhaust and at the next light he asked me if i was supercharged. i laughed and said no just a pulley he looked sad lol

 

you arent its not because its unbalanced? Could it be more of a vibration?

 

I had a really bad vibration with the crank pulley. Has to be unbalanced. btw a little off topic.. sorry

 

crap....i have a ticking noise.......................................I think it's coming from the wheels though....

Does the ticking happen during idle?

 

^^^ the plastic on the mirrors ticks while your driving sometime grab the side mirror and wiggle it to see if thats where its coming from

 

uh....negative.

The ticking progressively increases with wheel velocity. I'm hoping somethign is just rubbing against the wheel somewhere...hopefully I can get it on a lift tomorrow to check it out
