Default Got the code - Now what?

P0456
EVAP Emission Control System Leak

Very Small

I'm guessing this is coming from my newly installed ebay intake. No flaming here please, not asking for opinions on ebay intakes, just looking for constructive advice.

What can/should I do now? Does that mean there isn't a good seal on the MAF? Any advice? Thanks!

This is just a wild stab in the dark but have you checked your fittings? Maybe sensing an air leak where the couplers are?

Yea, i've checked, double checked, and checked again. Everything is on there nice and snug. My only worry is the maf, I think its on completely, but air sure can fit into tiny places. I've read about people sealing it, I don't know if thats successful or what not...

Are you sure no air is coming in from the couplings? Maybe try and take duct tape or electrical tape around the seams to test. If it clears your golden and know what and where to fix. Just don't leave duct tape on or we will rice and tater you

lol yea, I hear ya. I'll try that. I'll even reseat everything just to be safe.

So in lamens terms, this code is telling me that there is air sneaking out somewhere?

If thats the case, the only 2 options are:
1) The maf
2) The coupler

Correct?

So if I make sure those are as good as can be and I get a cel, I'm better off just throwing back on the stock intake to save myself hours and hours of more useless work? I just dont want to lose the sri, I really like it!

not exactly

i ran with my injen cai for months before i got the CEL. It may actually be a loose connection in the rubber vacuum lines running every which way in that part of the engine bay. you have to check *all* of them

Oh yeah, that too! ^^^^

Of course do not forget to reset the ECU and try again. If all else fails reinstall stock intake, reset ECU and see what happens.

try loose gas cap, if that doesnt work put the stock intake back on and take it to a dealer, could be a tsb on it. I dont work at the dealer anymore so i cant look it up for you. Chances are its not the intake.

Yep. i've reset the ecu several times now (which is really annoying btw lol). I'm going to have to check everything REALLY closely as the code is reading a 'very small leak'. Hopefully once I check everything and reseat the intake, it'll go away.

If not, I PRAY that the stock intake will get rid of the cel - luckily i'm still on warranty if not (but not for long)

Important question here though:
If I don't find the problem but get one of those scangauges that turns off the cel, is that doing any harm to the car? Basically overriding the cel and telling the ecu to turn it off, is that harmful?

Oh, and I checked the gas cap and have even gotten gas since the first time the cel came on, and it came on again. But i'll check it for integrity

Well... the VSV (vacuum switching valve) for he evap system is mounted to the intake. When you replaced the intake you would have to have mounted it to that one, or left it hanging. My guess is that since it occured after you guys swapped intakes, something is leaking around that valve. If it werent for the intake, I would say the gas cap as well or other EVAP components, but it is pretty coincidental that it happened after removing and replacing those parts.

usually when you get a ODB code for EVAP Emission Control System Leak, it's realated to the MAF. Engifineer I correct too when he mentions the VSV. double check all seals and if that doesn't do it it may be the MAF. I was getting the same code on my friend's 2002 VW Jetta 1.8T Wolfsburg...replaced the MAF and the code never surfaced.

So I checked all of the hoses - everything looks good. I checked the MAF (took it out and replaced it in) - that looks good, and I reseated the intake. The VSV is not actually attached to this intake, I have it ziptied up so it doesn't go flying around, but I looked at it and it appears to be fine. So I didn't find anything at all wrong with anything, but I did reposition it, so hopefully the cel will not come back on (even though I didn't reset the ecu just now b/c its not on). If it does, I don't see many more options than replacing it with the stock, reseting the ecu, and if it STILL comes on, i'll take it in for warranty repair.

I had that code before when my car was almost new. Check your gas cap. Try driving a while on the interstate, that is what helped me. Mine came from the cold weather and I think there was just moisture in the lines but long distance driving cleared it up and never came back on.

I checked the gas cap numerous times and have filled up on gas several times. It has kept coming back so far from, so i doubt that it's that. Wouldn't it be nice though! lol
