Default Ground Wire kit DIY help please

So I'm planning on making my own ground wire kit like Mikochu's: https://www.scionlife.com/tech/?article=12

His tutorial is for the xA/xB so if anyone has any recommendations or suggestions such as grounding points, or wire guage preference (ie 4 vs 8 guage) please share. I would really appreciate any suggestions.

Also does anyone think I would benifit at all from running a wire from my alternator + to my bater + terminal? I know people do this as part of "the Big Three" Upgrade to improve the quality of their sound systems. I do not have a sound system, the reson I'm planning a ground wire kit is to reduce throttle lag and what not. So for my goals, would an alternator to battery wire help?

thanks for any help! :-)

It does nothing for the way the car runs or the throttle. I dont care what others say. If it DOES make a change in the performance of the car, you had a bad ground to start with which should have been traced out and corrected.

99.99999% of "throttle lag" is due to higer rotational mass (aka a heavy flywheel), not and electrical problem. The other fraction of a percent will be due to the programming which keeps TBW from being over responsive, which it will be if not electronically damped. Neither of these things has anything to do with poor grounding.

well I've heard differently but more to the point, considering how inexpensuve it would be to do, if this mod ends up not doing anything, I won't be too upset. So if any one else has thoughts to offer, please share, thanks.

Differing thoughts on the matter are incorrect.

thank you, DonNguyen, that is golden.

and mattvs and other nay-sayers, I know there will be no realy performance benifit. But its an inexpensive project for me to waste some time with so let me do my ground wire thing

No one is bashing you for doing it. Just stating the facts for those that will expect a benefit from them.

Dash lights will not be brighter, I can tell you for sure there is zero chance of this based upon the way the car is wired (and the way those circuits are laid out with isolated power suppy systems). You can run the dash lighting direct to the battery, which is THE best ground they can have and they will not be brighter.. and yes, I have done this while testing mods on my car.

Idle will move around normally, that is not an issue unless it is extreme. Ground kits will not benefit that at all either.

Any improvement you see or think you see from a ground kit is caused by one of the two following reasons:

1 - You had a bad ground somewhere to start with. A little time with a wrench and maybe some cleaner would have fixed it rather than slapping on a pile of messy wires. If my air cleaner is clogged up, I can build a new intake to bypass the old one..... or I can fix the issue and simply replace the air filter

2 - You were expecting to see a gain, and over analyzed everything about the car afterward, making yourself believe you saw a change.

And number 2 is not meant to be an insult, the is probably THE most common thing that happens after modding your car. The same goes with something being wrong. A LOT of people email me and ask about issues they have after swapping thier gauge leds out and find out that they are acting normally, they just didnt notice it before because they werent analyzing it so close. A great example is the order in which the lighting in the car comes on. The gauges will light up when you turn on the lights, regardless of key position. The HVAC needs he key on. A lot of people dont notice this until after looking for it and think that something is wrong or different.

Intakes/exhausts are probably THE most common form of this. I cabn "feel" the power gain is a common phrase, even if thier dyno or thier track times show otherwise. It sounds different and they are really paying attention to how it performs.. hence the placebo effect.

But, if someone likes the looks and such of a ground kit, there is nothing wrong with that. But when people come on convincing others that they will get all these magical gains from them, people will speak up.

Your idle might not be that bad really, it is normal for some slight movement. Despite the fact that I plan on doing a ground wire kit myself I'm gonna have to say that engifineer is correct. If you really think there is a problem with your idle try cleaning your factory grounds. If you want to do a ground wire kit for the hell of it, just do it. Honestly you could fab a kit yourself for like $20. I'm going to do one because I figure, why not? I have already gathered everything i need in my room so next time I don't have anything to do on a sunday afternoon, I'll slap on some wires.

if u turn up the volume the picture will be ____ ( dvd) i thought i need to ground the the dvd screen but the dvd screen has nothing but just 1 video cable to the hu.. maybe i should ground the hu itself? and if i pause the video ( dvd) and im at the redlight and i start to accelerate and switch gears i can her weird noise from the speakers.. as higher go rpm goes the noise go higher.. when i change gears to noise go back down and its start to go up just as i accelerate.. WEIRD!! its maybe the HU itself.. i should just replace it.. maybe i should ground it or something.. idk...

Wow that is quite odd indeed. Check your all your HU wiring verry closly i guess. Really it might come down to it being a bad piece of equipment. And as far as it looking good, fabing one yourself allows you to customize it to your specs. For example I'm doing black wires with red shrink wrap. Most are silver wires with black wrap.
