IF I were you id do an oil change ever 3k or 4k. 5k to me is a bit long. I personally do 3k since im turbod anyways.

also I like to pour about half a quart of new oil through the engine b4 plugging it back up and refill. make it extra cleaner
Yea, its cheaper to buy the jug, but they don't make the jug in 5w-20. I wish they did, but they don't. I was using mobil1 extended performance 5w-30 before, but ever since we had to switch to 5w-20, thats no longer an option. They don't make extended performance in 5w-20 which is really a bummer. Nevertheless, I still go 4.5-5K between changes b/c the filter and oil is nice high quality stuff.

Get yourself to Advance Auto Parts.. They are having a Buy One Get One sale on Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic Oil.. They sell both 5w-30 and 5w-20.

I picked up a case (12qts) for about $36.

Go.

I got turbo so I'd like to have a bit of a piece of mind
Yeah well a turbo is a different story because of the extreem temps you expose the oil to when cooling the turbo bearings and that usually requires some special oil capable of handling that high a temp without breaking down. But for normally asperated engines today with the tight tollerances in the piston rings the Mobile 1 oil should be good for 5k easy and more - some is good for 15k but Scion/Toyota requires 5k oil changes for the warrenty.

yeah, well when i was NA I changed every 4k the first 2 i did 5k but then I didnt really like the idea of the same oil being in my car for almost half a year.

there really is no way of looking at your oil to know that is when to change it. the only way is to test it, which I know none of us will do so 3k-5k is the safe way to go. anything under 3k is just like burning a hole in your wallet

I completely solved the oil change problem . . . I changed to Synlube . . . my next oil change is 153,600 miles or 15 years, filter at 39,600 and 78,600 miles.

about the mobil 1 extended(the 15k mile stuff)

put that in my moms blazer(she always forgets changings, my step dad has a bad back, and im at college) to see how it worked...

after 9k miles(same filter...its a 7500 mile filter, ran it a bit over just becauise of timing issues, cant get it changed yet)

her oil was cleaner then my tc with factory oil at 5k....

so yeah it works pretty good(used a fram extended guard.....dont wnat to use that on my tc anymore, just realized it was the smaller one for the camrys.....need to get the purolator one, i know its right size

just adding my $.02

well if cleaner is by the way it looks..........it doesnt really mean its good.
If an oil is clear and looks clear after 9k miles.........the oil isnt probably doing its job. it suppose to get dark which means its collecting the dirt, grit and grin thats all up in your engine.

the only way to actually know when the oil is bad is a test not by looks

If I can find the website that I got all this info from I will post it. but it makes sense to me when I read it

I think the most important things you have to remember are .... if you let the cluth out and the rpms shoot strait up .... you shouldnt have done that. you can tap the gas when shifting (like the other guys say) but I dont even bother doing that. When im slowing down I normally brake and shift at the same time and sometimes put it in N. I know someone is going to say "dont take it totally out of gear when stopping" ...but I do sometimes - I really dont care how much mpg I get. If I had to guess im only getting low 20's to begin w/.

3min3m2, Watch out using the Purolators. Although they are the right size, I have seen some cases for OUR filters by Purolator where the centertube does not extend all the way to the end of the filter, the filter elements are just sitting there by themselves for the last half inch or so. I haven't yet found a aftermarket filter that's made right for our engines yet.

I don't see what is wrong with using the OE filters. They are made by Denso, the design is great, and the price is ok.

Actually that is the oil breaking down and getting dirty - if it doesn't "FEEL" slippery between your fingers then it pretty much is dead and needs changing. If you totally want to screw up your conception of how oil works and breaks down check out the Synlube.com website.
