what i would probably do is take it off and use some brake parts cleaner in it and an air compressor to blow the residue out.....not 100% sure though so get a second opinion

Do not use brake cleaner, use throttle body cleaner. Remove the hose to the throttle body, have someone with the key in the on position hold down the throttle pedal. Follow instructions on the can.

how many miles do you think you would have to put on to know it needs to be cleaned?

The standard interval (not Scion specific) is 30K miles. If your local pump's gas is nasty you might want to check earlier.
Once you have a look at the throttle body, it's usually pretty obvious if you need it or not.

That is correct...the throttle body is the air inlet the fuel is delivered via direct injectors. A 30K check certainly wouldn't hurt anything... your filter will remove damn near all of the contaminates in the air... whether its stock or if you're running a CAI. If you keep your filter replaced/cleaned when you're supposed to... you probably wouldn't have a need to check the T.B. unless you notice a problem.

Uncombusted exhaust gas is recirculated back into the throttle body for emissions improvement.

Just a little note....so please don't take offense to this...if you know it great...but others may not...

Anytime you take off your air inlet pipe...stock and CAI alike... be extremely careful and have a CLEAN lint free shop towel handy to put in the opening after you take it off. Because it goes without saying that anything at all that gets down into the engine via that inlet....and you're seriously screwed.

yes that may be true...but its not to the level of the initial delivery.... but an occasional check like that certainly wouldn't hurt.

This is true. The one thing that makes TB's dirty is the valve cover vent that feeds back to the intake. This is where your intake pulls air that causes issues the oil gets in the air stream (little by little not large amounts) and when the filtered air passes it it will wind up trapping more dirt. Air filters will only go down to a certain micron.

true.....there is a way to avoid that, that isnt very expensive... you could setup a catch can...I've seen a number of people with tC's install it below the battery tray... that will help filter out all the crap that could normally get pulled in. They are cheap and easy to install.
