Default How much does fifth gear cost?

Because mine's probably laying all over I-270.

I went down to fourth to pass a semi, went back into fifth... and then it just popped out as soon as I started accelerating. Tried it again, nothing. I was 30 miles into a 250 mile journey... so at least this didn't happen in middle-of-nowhere, IL.

Anyway, about how much am I looking at here? :\

Take your shifter apart first and ensure that the ball and upper mount is not out of place. Then check the cable mounts on it. If the shifter is simply out of whack, it could be preventing you from fully engaging it. May not be the issue, but doesnt hurt to check the small stuff first.

Hopefully this is a simple(r) mechanical issue... because it is my understanding that 5th gear is actually cut into the shaft, and not a separate cog.

Thanks, first of all. I probably should have been more specific, heh.

When I put it in gear, it feels like I'm normally putting it in gear, i.e. there was something there. Then, when I would put my foot down, the shifter would just wobble and pop back into neutral. I could hold it in gear myself and accelerate, but as soon as I would let go, it would let go. All of my other gears feel and engage perfectly normal.

I'm going out to check the shifter innards now. Hopefully, it's just a cable problem... but if that's not it, hopefully the dealership doesn't rape me too much.

It might be a bad synchro.

Mine would pop out of 5th gear as well. Turns out, the last mechanic who changed my clutch, also broke a tranny seal.

So as a consequence, my tranny started acting weird, because it was leaking tranny fluid.

The first sign, was 5th gear popping out.

Tranny fluid aside. It might only be one synchro >.<

No fluids. I just had <trusted local shop> change the oil because it's too cold and I'm too lazy, and they didn't say anything to me about it.

It's at the dealership now, as am I.

The dealership wants to just replace the entire transmission. They say it would cost more to open it up, find out what's wrong, and fix it... than it would be to just replace the whole thing. $3500.

Luckily, I bought an extended warranty through them that covers me up to 70,000 miles. The warranty company is sending someone out later today to look at the car and decide if they'll cover it or not.

If they do: cool, a new transmission.
If they don't: WTF, a whole new transmission? $3500? That can't be right.
