Default intake questions

I am thinking of getting an intake for christmas and want to just clear some things up before I go on.If I install a cold air intake, what are the chances of me destroying my engine? I know you risk sucking water into the engine but isnt there a shield all over the bottom of the tc? Are there intakes that have a prevention of this or is the only way to prevent this just getting a short ram.
