Default K&N Air Filter

Ive read a lot of pros and cons on the use of an K&N air filter (not the intake). Some say your gas mileage isnt really affected and you get a small boost when liftoff. It claims to give you +3 HP. Is this worth it for ~ $60?

Yea for a first mod it does give you a small boost in power and if your not wanting to spend the cash on a intake Id say go for it.

Hey I dont't know if these helps or not. If you buy it from http://shop.advanceautoparts.com and use the promo code A123. You can get the filter for like $35.

If you live in a CARB state then the K&N filter is an okay investment, but if u can run a intake w/o getting pulled over, go for the intake.
The Drop In filter actually lost HP on this test.

I don't know about any power increase but it is the best air filter for you air box and you should always want the best for you car no matter the cost. It's a one time cost of $60, or $35 like that one guy said, because you should get the cleaning kit and you'll never worry about it again. I used to run it in my VDub, good air filter. But don't get it because of any power increase. Go CAI if you want that.

You will never feel or notice the advantage from a drop in filter, it will be more of a peace of mind mod.

I think I'll try the filter since a good intake will cost much more. Thank you all for your advice. Will post whether it is a difference or not.

We are talking about using the stock air box. Are you sure you are not talking about the cone filter for you short ram? Because that isn't what we are talking about.

You do realize you have two air filters? In addition to the removable one, there is a carbon filter mounted to the lid.
You can make a short intake with a curved piece of 2 3/4"
tubing. Drill a hole for theMAF, space it to EXACTLY thesame height when measured from the inside. Mount it with Hi-Temp RTV. When it's dry, paint it with wrinkle paint. I used and open end Tenzo filter and it fits nicely on the fender air inlet!
When all was said and done, it cost me around $50, including the paint.

One thing to remember when using any oiled cotton filter. What happens when you wash cotton? It shrinks. That free-flowing new filter doesn't flow so well anymore.
For longevity, I usually stick with a dry filter.

If i remember correctly Bobistheoilguy did a comparison of air filters and the OEM style paper filter was one of the best.

With $60 you could buy a knock off short ram that will do the job a little better. I think they even make full cold air intakes on eBay for 60 more or less. As long as your not planning to spray it, eBay intakes are fine in my book.
