Default mufflerless?

has anyone ran without a muffler yet? does it sound really bad? any power gains? I know on a xB theres are actually power losses. Donno it tC would do the same.
Im planning to just take off the entire muffler and have a bent pipe in place and a somewhat muffling chrome exhaust tip.
Donno if it'll work, anyone has any ideas?

I've got an idea; don't do anything so silly! It will just sound like azz and advertize to the world that you don't know no better...........

If it's too loud you can expect the police to hassle you. When the muffler on my old car went out I got cited for noise issues. Also, if you live in a state where there are mandatory inspections, like Virginia, you can expect your car to fail. Check local laws on this before you do something you might regret.

Mufflers do more than just deaden the sound of combustion, they maintain a certain amount of backpressure, which is critical to performance. If backpressure is off you will get reduced performance. Crappy performance and hassle from the police is not a good combination.

In the classified section I think somebody was selling their "race pipe" which is pretty much just the axleback section without a muffler. Looked kinda neat. As long as you dont have a header, it wont be too loud. Once you get a header though, prepare for Formula 1!

yeah, i live in North Dakota so no one gives a damn about emissions. I dont have a header yet but planning to get a Megan some times next year. I'll try it out myself and see how it goes.

running without an axleback surprises quite a few people how "not bad" it sounds..

that is.. if you don't have a header.

i'm been running without one for a few months now.

I don't know, but I think you might lose some torque due to the loss of back pressure.

yea.. i do....

i'm just waiting on some funds to get precisionmuffler's axleback

it'll help bring back some backpressure once a muffler is back on there.

My friend's removed the axelback portion of his exhaust. It's loud as heck. No real noticeable gains though.

i just did this kinda, i started it up at night, when it was real quite and rapped it a few times in teh garage.. its not that loud at all... but i put a flowtech muffler on anyways.. i think thats from farm and fleet.. its not loud at all... and i think i might just put in a short short like a 15" glasspack, somthing thats straight through technology... lol.. and see what i get..

i just bought a muffler from a guy on here, actualy, just the axleback piping and tip.. thats how i did this.. just welded up some 90's from some exhaust chunks i had laying around.. i got a clip on here in case anyones interestd, but no replies.. WTF?
if you take it off, its not that loud.. try it, takes 5min to take off the factory muffler cause its just two 9/16" bolts..

When I first looked for exhaust when the car just came out, I found nuthin. So i went to a custom exhaust shop and he suggested a straight pipe with a resonator and my friend said it best, "we herd you and five minutes later you were here." It was loud as hell especialy with a header.
