Angry RPM little low or little high

So i was driving this morning and i accidentally had it in engine braking, i pulled over, put into park and then back into drive, i continued on and noticed that at 65 mph i was doing 2500 rpm where i usually was doing 2900. When i had it in engine braking i was doing 3500 at 55 mph. I dont know whats wrong but its kinda freaking me out. I dont have the money to afford new parts if something is broken but i also need the car to get to work. Could it just have been a fluke or something worse? Idk if anyone is even still on this forum site but i figured i might as well try.

I drive a stick but 65 mph is close to 3000 rpms. If I noticed that ~65 mph was clocking 2500 rpms, I'd also be concerned. As for what to do, I'd probably look for the symptom to repeat itself. If the symptom doesn't repeat, I might chalk it up to reading the gauge wrong (or a 'glitch' as you suggested.) If the symptom repeats, I'd probably ask a transmission shop whether they're familiar with the symptom. If they hit you with a high estimate, a second opinion might save $. Good luck figuring it out.

I'd probably start with an ECU reset to see if it sorts itself out (disconnect battery for 30 seconds). If no luck, I'd then clean the MAF (just spray it with maf cleaner and then let it sit out for 10 min) and the TB (with carb cleaner if removed from the car, with elbow grease and a microfiber if installed on the car) and see if that helps. You should clean both of these periodically anyway. When MAF's get dirty they affect all sorts of parameters.
