Default Overheated last night

I was driving to my friends house when i heard a lil pop and my battery light came on. I thought nothing of it until i tried to turn, and it was almost impossible to turn. So when i went to pull over i saw that my temp gauge was past the red at the top! So i shut the car off right away and opend the hood to find that my belt was gone. So i called for my mechanic and he said that he is going to throw on a new belt for me. But i was think what the hell happened to the belt. As my friend was driving me home from the shop we saw my belt on the side of the road where i first heard that pop. The belt was torn apart. It was like something was scraping it for a long time and it finally just broke. I installed a lightweight crank about 3 weeks ago which i think caused the problem. Did this ever happen to anybody else?

if you put the pulley on just a little bit crooked it might have caused it to wear out the belt real fast.

have the mechanic install the pulley for you if you did it by yourself
