Default Power Steering Pump..

If the pump blows are there any chance of metal shards getting down in the rack and pinion. If so can you do a flush and get it out or does it just need replaced.

I'd try replacing the pump only, just to see if the current rack and pinion still works. Might save a few bucks.

First generation tC power steering systems run hot and burn the fluid. The resulting soot falls out of suspension and settles in the rack. It's a good idea to change Dexron III fluid every 20 to 25 thousand miles. Dexron VI is synthetic, costs a little more but lasts longer between changes.

Another way to tell when you need new fluid, soot will black out your translucent reservoir. The fluid level will become difficult if not impossible to read. New fluid will eventually clean the inside of the reservoir, including the screen. A clogged reservoir screen can contribute to pump breakdown.
