Default Project 400WHP. Suggestions how to do it?!

I was thinking for a long time how to do it, never came out with the right answer though.

This is the thought....

SCION TC STOCK 2.4L , how do you make it 400 WHP (horsepower at your wheels) in its natural aspiration form?

I have seen on average dyno charts show around 145 WHP and 138 Torque at the wheels on our stock 2.4L TC.

Off topic:

With a Turbonetics kit or ZPI or anything else that is considered turbo kit you would get anywhere from 230ish WHP, I have seen on some posts up to 430WHP. One thing that ticks me off about turbo kits is that it is just about 1 day of bolt on work( for people who know what they are doing). Where is the joy of actually collecting all the parts together and putting them on one by one, building your car exactly the way you want it.
No offend to all turbo people. It is great, a lot of acceleration, HP, joy, etc. however it is going on the top of the stock engine in most cases. A lot of boost equals to a lot of joy ( in the beginning) , also a lot of boost equals to a lot of trouble at the end. We all know that Toyota's 2.4L 4 cyl. is a great engine no doubt about it, however how great would it be under 8 to 17 psi turbo or even more pressure in some cases i doubt we could keep the engine alive for another even 30,000 miles with everyday driving.

On topic:

Today I would like you to help me figure out, how could i get 400 WHP NA on the 2.4L TC engine. It sounds like a crazy thing, at the same time it sounds like a wild ride. However with all the parts available out there for TC including stuff like pistons cam shafts, rods, chips, intakes, exhausts and so on i think with some modification of the engine we could succeed in this mission.

A couple more things the ride needs to be street legal, or at least it needs to show street legal on emission tests. Also its needs to be able to handle the horsepower it caries (in other words swapping parts like the pistons with more horsepower resistant pistons would be needed).

P.S. Please post pictures and average price if needed with your replies. Pictures of dynos of the car with the your chosen part(s) installed, are always welcome. ( Post some prove that the car has that HP, of course if you have it available)

Trade it in for a c6 corvette z06, then you'll get your 400whp. Honestly, not to rain on your parade, but not gonna happen.

400whp equals roughly 500 crank hp (typically a 25% loss through the drivetrain). 500 crank hp is about the max tuners can get out of the Toyota 3sgte and Mitsubishi 4g63 engines (the 2 best engineered production 4 cylinder turbo motors ever in my opinion). both are turbo engines. doing that much hp on a NA 4 cylinder would require a flux capacitor LOL.

bro im sorry.. i have to jump on this ASAP.. you have got to be the most noobest, retardedest, dee dee dee i have seen on this site so far..

400 whp NA and you think its possible with "all the goodies" thats out their for the tc... wow man.. you seriously need some education on engines and their capabilites and reality check.. yea its harsh what im saying but crap i get tired of seeing stupid threads like this.. this tops the other captain obvious who wanted 300 NA WHP..

you new mission.. / yourself now before more embarasement to the scion community you will bring..

please please please read and do your research and learning before posting things like this..because everytime i read a thread like this baby jesus cries.

*END RANT*

WOW i just have to read it again to really make sure.. you really posted this thread.. WOW..

I don't think even the Horizon motorsports NA tC runs 400 whp...

But for ____s/giggles, let me run some estimated numbers for you.

Let's assume you've done all the NA "goodies" and gotten what's accepted as about the most you'll get prior to tuning, which is between 180 and 200 (let's just say 200 for now.) If you make 200 whp at redline then you're making about 161 lbs-ft.

Does that figure, 161 ft-lbs, look familiar? If the torque didn't drop off after 3k RPM then you'd be making 200 hp at redline. Continuing...

VERY optimistically, you'd make around 180 ft-lbs by the time you're peaking power so in order to make 400 hp, you'd have to spin your engine very high. If you're finished with all the mechanical goodies, the last way to make significant power without completely redesigning the engine is to rev higher. The equation given to measure power is

HP = (torque x RPM) / (5252)

Given this, and given your goal of 400 hp and my optimistic estimation of 180 ft-lbs, it is possible to calculate how fast you need to spin your engine to meet your 400 hp goal.

RPM = (HP * 5252) / (torque)
or,
RPM = (400hp * 5252) / (180 ft/lbs)

which brings up up to about 11,700 RPM.

Which then brings your mean piston speed to about 37 meters per second. By comparison, an average NASCAR engine runs about 25 m/s.

All these numbers are based on estimations, of course, but...

How about cutting your goals in half?

If you're really serious, you could give Comptech a call to get an accurate estimate as to whether you can achieve your goal. But like kungpaosamuraiii said, you're going to have to spin the internals pretty fast to make the HP.

Do you even realize what you have to have a TURBOd tc hit 400 on the floor???

It's not a bolt ons day of work the last time I checked. As for running 400 N/A nothing is impossible but damn you need a rediculous amount of money plus a creative mind...

All you guys laughing at him saying its impossible, just silly.

Anything is possible with cold hard cash...

spend about 100k on ur tC motor and ull be runnin 400 whp N/A. Just have to make all custom lightweight high strength everything.

not to change topics to threadjack or anything... but lets look at your other post... and then compare it to this one...

The terminal seems like it is never going to fit the original battery terminals. However i would like to know if anyone has installed ground wires on the engine on their Tc and if so, can pls post some helpful pictures? Thanks a lot.

I was just thinking..... redo the block (pistons and displacement if possible) redo the head and then some fuel system modifications with good electrical system would do it ..... that's as far as the HP goes. Of course you would need to add quite a few ECU tricks, and the high octane fuel is understandably a must..

Some people started talking about acceleration, too. For that i was thinking that we could custom fit the new 8 speed gearbox of the Lexus ES or LS one of them had it ... also you would need a little gear ratio adjustment for maximum top speed. Also removing some of the ( cosmetic ) parts of the car and replacing with lighter weight onces would be needed. too

The way i calculated you could have 400 whp or very close to it with at least 180 mph top speed for about another $30k- $ 40k for parts you might be able to fit some labor too , depending on how and where you buy your part from. It looks pretty decend price comparing to what you can buy with that much money which is not going to run that fast ... For example... a 350Z, M3 , etc.... you do the math ... Lets say $17K for you new TC + $40K for you drive train ,etc. = $57K .....
For you new 350Z plain set-up you would pay at least about $27K - $28K plus your NA parts it is going to be way more expensive... for a new M3 when can't even start from a decent low price....

For other American V8 cars , which would do that much horsepower even in stock set -up... It would be cheaper in some cases (of course because way less taxes and expenses are being added, that is if you buy the car in US) ... but for the engine they have .... they should be running definitely way better.... For European and Asian (if any) V8 cars we are talking about way too much money......

SO at the end I think the TC comes out way cheaper and the project is quite possible..

...and how would one drive this 400whp FRONT DRIVE car?

Want 400whp (or at least reasonably close to it)? Start with a 350z or Mustang GT, then S/C. You would be around 400 crank hp, but with a decent set of tires you would actually be able to control the power that you're making.

your an idiot.. not matter how much money you spend on the 2az..400 NA is impossible(even with NOS).. END YOURSELF ...quickly!

dude are you seriously that stupid..what ever calculations your making i suggest getting a refund because your calculator is broken as hell...for the 57k you spend you can buy yourself an EVO or STI..upgrades the turbo's and other parts and have enough money left over to put a down payment on a house..

bro seriously.. BUY A FOCUS...TRADE YOUR TC IN.. and get a razor and / it there...

but looking at your posts that you've made so far.. i really dont even know were to begin with you...

WOW...first of all....what the hell are you going to do with a 400 WHP DAILY DRIVER!! Unless you're sponsored, or something AND you race (legally, of course), then I could understand pumping up the hp.....but a tC ain't the car for it!!

Just get a EVO/350/Mustang/STi or something and leave that poor defenseless 2.4L alone, you evil so and so, lol!!

If you're looking for more kicks in your tC, just buy the factory supercharger or some aftermarket turbo and start there....think about it....
