Real HP gains from a cat back on a tc??
Ok, so I have been searching and see things here and there but no real answers for me. I am trying to find out from those that have a cat back exhaust and have dyno'd what was the actual gains? I mean what were you stock (w/ w/out an intake-that part doesn't matter) and then what were you after installing a catback or even full exhaust for that matter.
I am starting to consider doing some form of exhaust but am just curious what I will actually gain from it besides more noise. I don't mind if the noise is a by product of more hp but if hp is only like 5-10 hp then it just seems like a waste of money to run a full exhaust. (na of course, as a fi set up is completely different imo)
Thanks guys.

my buddy has a TRD intake and axle back exhaust and i had Megan headers, Invidia s-pipe, Megan midpipe, DC Sports axle back and Injen SRI. he dynod 137 whp and i dynod 149 whp on a dyno dynamics. you be the judge
Thanks man! That is exactly the sort of information I am looking for! I appreciate it. Not trying to sound cocky or anything with my comments, it is just a little hard to swallow the fact that for all the money spent, that there really is not a significant gain in hp with this platform. I've had a couple of suby's and you get alot more power with the same amount of money spent on the same parts. Oh well. I am sure I will end up with some sort of exhaust on the car at some point.
were these auto or manual trannys? manual trannys normally dyno about 10whp more than autos (correct me if im wrong but thats what i can remember seeing here on SL)
Are you suggesting that the numbers could be for an auto and a manual would be 10 more than his posted numbers?
I have heard hp numbers in the area of 5-15 for a full exhaust on a manual tranny for the tc. Just trying to find out what some realistic numbers are if you will.

See, that is what I am talking about. I am hearing numbers that are just all over the place. I will admit, that 5 hp for a cat back has been a common number that I have heard. Just rediculous! Especially for the amount of money spent imo. I mean, on my suby, I got about 20 hp just for the downpipe! This just sucks! All I can say is that Toyota did a decent job with the stock exhaust if that is all we are getting out of it by opening it up more.
1-5 if that. you shouldnt be expecting much from bolt ons.
and comparing a boosted suby to a non boosted car is dumb your obviously freeing up tons of restricted BS on a turbo application

I am aware of that! Scionracer's was at my house the other day for a spring install and he is running a DC sports header, Megan piping (I believe) and an HKS axle back. Sounded awesome but a little loud. I would probably just do the cat back to help keep the sound down a bit. Either that or just a cat back MR Drift spec as I like that one as well and the tip doesn't look as big from what I have seen. Could be wrong though.
Working on parting out a bmx bike at the moment and am thinking more and more about just going ahead and doing an exhaust. At the same time, I think I really want a set of wheels!

Check out my signature.\/ the real gains there are from the header. But combining that with a good catback will add 5ish to the header alone. Def need to upgrade resonators tho if your doing headers.
in my opinion if u want to switch out the "exhaust" system, you'll need to switch out everything from headers.
the purpose is to make ur car breathe OUT better. if you have any parts that's stock, then it's still "clogging" up the exhaust.
the only way to have a smooth "breathing" out is if you replace the whole piping system (from header all the way to the exhaust)
Megan Headers -$197
Invidia s-pipe - $140
DC Sports Axle back - $337
injen cai/sri- $250
Total = $924
s/h = over $1000
I dunno, spending $1000 for only 15 hp gain.
comparing to spending $3000-4000 for a turbo kit for a 100 hp gain.

^^Funny because that guy came to watch me to learn how to install some springs on a car!
No, I completely understand what an exhaust is supposed to do. I also explained to Uhsentc the other night when he was at my house, my feelings about dumping $1k on an exhaust that really just makes more noise. I am in total agreement with that which is why I went after doing my springs first to start with.
Also understand that the last cars I modified were Subaru's so bolt ons actually net some hp on that platform. I was simply looking for real life numbers of what people have gotten for an exhaust on this car and not all these "claimed" figures that are out there.
I suspect that I will simply do an axle back in the near future and then go back do dealing with my suspension (r. sway, engine mount, maybe some tower braces) and brakes (lines, pads, rotors). I still need to do my gfi as well which is actually going to be the next step. But I do want to be able to hear my car to some degree. I am not worried about everyone else hearing it though.

I tried started doing the GFI u told me about, i was gonna stop at "stage 1": remove resonator and drop in the filter. so i got this little cap from home depot for 50 cents. but went by to a local advance auto shop and hoping i can score a k&n filter right away but turns out none of them carry in the store, have to wait for it to special order. so now i have to wait mroe than a week to get the filter.
just for your information, the cap u're suppose to get is an 1 inch in diameter. i dont' think any one mention it anywhere. first time i got it, i was way off ( i got a 1.5 inch and another for 2 inches)
