Default Removing the Water Pump

Quick question guys. My water pump has 6 digit mileage on it and its starting to leak. I'm going to fix this and found the DIY:
http://clubsciontc.com/forums/diy-in...-21331/?page=2

It calls for a special tool 09962-01000. From what I hear they aren't sold at the dealer or local auto-parts store and u have to special order them. It looks like all it does is keep the pulley from spinning while you break the bolts loose. I think I can get by without it.

My question is, has anyone swapped water pumps in their tC without the SST? Did you just use a couple close-ended wrenches or what? How hard is it?

you can use a medium pry bar to wedge between the bolts on the waterpump pulley and loosen the bolts one at a time

what i did was first get a cheap screw driver. Then used two wrenches, one to hold the pully inplace and one to remove the bolt. Once i got to to where I had one bolt left, I stuck the screw driver into one of the empty holes and used it to hold the pully inplace.

Stick a screwdriver through the whole and problem fixed. Worked for me.

I used a strap wrench, the kind used for oil filters, when I swapped the waterpump pulley.

Bumping this one more time. One more question, where have you guys ordered your new pumps from? There are a million places to pick from. Looking to narrow it down a bit with some help.

I'm bumping this thread back up because I'm in the middle of doing this.

I've got the car up on stands, the alternator is out and the coolant is drained. I'm trying to get the bolts off of the WP pulley but the g'damn things are on so tight! I've tried using an oil filter wrench, two closed headed wrenches, a screwdriver, but jesus christ none of them will budge. I almost started stripping them so I quit and took a breather.

Aren't these things only supposed to be torqued to 20lbs? How in the F did you guys get those bolts off? I'm getting royally ____ed over here so ANY help you guys can give would be greatly appreciated.

a long handle 14mm with prybar wedged between 2 of the other bolts and it should break loose easily

Do the bolts stick out far enough to keep the bar from breaking loose? I don't have one lying around so I'd have to reassemble everything and run out to get one. These bolts aren't reverse threaded are they?

yeah they stick out just enough but you gotta place the pry bar just right between 2 of the bolts. they are not reverse thread. lefty loosy righty tighty.
