Default Restrictiveness

Alright. I admit I'm not the best forumer but i have been reading around a bit and have two questions about restrictiveness.

Everything powerwise about the car is still stock soo keep in mind this is still a brand new car.. been wut.. a month over. <750 miles total x.x i know. not my fault. haha

anyhow,

I noticed the CAI does add a bit of noise, guess i'm not too concerned with noise on the CAI end side, however i was under the hood and i realized there seems to be two boxes? what does the one closer to the engine do? [i know im stupid shhh haha] the one to the right is the air box for the filter. Somehow this doesn't look too restrictive. is this my imagination or does the aftermarket CAI actually relieve a lot of that restrictiveness and make more HP?

Then i went to the butt of the car and looked under. how perverted eh?
I noticed the ridiculously large can. Im surprised this isn't considered a ricer can by any means. The biggest exhaust i've ever seen. [im young shush ] I saw a cut up picture around here somewhere but i'm curious cuz my dad's camry has a tiny muffler and the tC gets this huge one. It is really restrictive or only slightly?

Im kinda in the process of deciding which one to do first pending on whether the restrictiveness will actually hurt a lot or little. As for what I'm considering?

I believe in Ebay parts.. up to a point.
Ebay intake + dry paper filter = umm... yeah.
or a homemade welded axle back with a muffler either from ebay [probably not], flowtech or dynomax. I was actually looking into the rectangular mufflers. Wanted to maintain an innocent stock look so i figured a tip + a rectangular muffler hidden under the back would be the best idea. and yes, noise IS an issue. I would like to have lowwww noise as in deep rumble not not annoying. Parents do drive this car occasionally and theyd be pretty mad at me if it was noisy. So suggestions. [I believe in DIY exhausts... and the best bang for buck. hate wasting $$$ when its not too necessary for slightly more quality. yeah i know, not that kinda "premium" person. I saw the brands on Cardomain.com so i was just wondering how they're quality was too]

So i admit, this is quite a dumb post but hey, I don't know the answers. thanks in advance.

I don't think the fuse box would be situated soo close that it seems to be connected to the air intake?

Just wondering what that thing is that i circled too.

but anyhow.. back to the original post...

From what I understand, the stock rear section is very restrictive. Also, the stock air box is compaired to a CAI, but from the intake stand point, its not all about restriction. Intakes are meant to bring colder air to the engine. Thats why you find the filter of a CAI in down in the fender well, away from the heat of the engine. As for your selection of a quiet but deep exhaust, I beleive the TRD exhaust would be good, but they aren't as cheap as other brands.

The little box attached to the airbox tract is a resonator box. It baffles the incoming air to reduce noise.

If you're really into the DIY stuff, check this. It's Doc. Isotope's Ghetto Fabulous Intake. It's basically an home made intake. If you get a chance, PM him. He's on Scionlife too. He'll tell you about that and his home made axleback. It's pretty nifty stuff.

First of all WOW. Second, if you remove the little box, which is a resonator for the stock air box, you have to block it off. Also you don't have a stock CAI. CAI is a Cold Air Intake, and you just have a limpy tube going from the stock air box to a few inches to the hole, to "draw" "cold" air. Do not go cheap on exhaust, because it will just make a LOT OF NOISE (read: can of bees here). If u want no noise, then use a quality boxy muffler and a huge resonator. There u go, no noise, and a little or no oomph.... What I mean is, if u mess with the exahust, u WILL make more noise, no matter what. Unless u get the TRD Axelback Exhaust. If u have the money that is. I have an ebay intake, an all I can say it's that: "Thank God I bought this instead of the Injen, I just saved myself over a hundred bucks." Yep, I have an ebay intake an I'm proud of it. With my current mods, exept my underdriven pulley, I got 160whp and 162wtq.

No need for a huge resonator. Grab a Spintech muffler get a few pipes welded together. It'll sound really good, flow well, and emit very little but very deep noise.

I don't recall calling it an CAI.. just a place where air goes in.
hmm.. yeah. would you be so kind as to refer to which ebay auction you got your intake off of? thanks

yeah, i know. mess with exhaust = more noise. I didn't mean to have it THAT quiet. its actually disturbing how my corolla makes more noise than my tc.... should be the reverse now shouldn't it.

the little box with the intake that you have circled thats the silencer for the intake.... all stock cars have a lil box input so the intake isnt as loud as if you open the air box or jus change the whole intake system itself
