Default second gear grind when cold out...what to do?

so, i've had my tc for over 2 years now (its an 05). i always had a slight grind when going into second gear when it was cold outside.
i had the dealership look into it, they couldn't reproduce the problem - typical

i thought i could fix the problem by changing to a short shifter, changing to solid cable and base shifter bushings, and swapping out the tranny fluid for redline mt-90. that seemed all good, but then winter came around and i notice it again.
it gets really bad when it's below 20 degrees out
i warm up my car for 5 minutes, i run through the gears before starting off.

if i double clutch second gear or just wait an extra second before putting it in second gear, it usually will not grind. it will only grind the first 3 or 4 shifts also.

i don't know what to do. i need my car everyday. i can't really swap back everything right now (too cold outside). i'd have to change back the fluid, shifter, and bushings before bringing it in.

i know other people are having this problem also. i just don't want to lose second gear all together and be out of warranty...is there a service bulletin on this?

I have the same setup you do and I have the same problem. MT-90 seems to fix the problem but after a while it came back. I just run through 1st and 2nd 3 or 4 times before I reverse my car out of garage. That seems to work. If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it too much. =D

Yea, the dealer is useless with this. All that you can do with them is what you did. Bring it in and keep complaining. Finally when something happens to it, you'll make them fix it and scream at them while you're at it!!

Let me ask you though, when did you put in the mt-90? I had the same problem as you, and the mt-90 didn't immediately fix it, but over time, it got a lot better as the mt-90 was in there for a bit.

are you talking about the "crunching" it seems to make as you put it into gear? If so, I have the same problem and my setup is stock right now.

yeah, its like a crunch...makes like a briip noise and you can feel it in the shifter

i put in the mt-90 this summer. obviously it seemed to smooth out my shifts then...but winter time still gives me the crunch

i think 4th gear is also doing it, i don't hear a crunch, but sometimes it will give me the same feeling that 2nd gear does, just not as bad though

Everytime I shift into second from first or downshift to 2nd from 3rd, I get that crunching everytime...not even just some of the time..EVERY shift. It bugs me.

i think it's a physical problem of the synchro not spinning up enough and meshing incorrectly

I wouldn't make a comment like that, if I hadn't ACTUALLY compared the two products. Was running Redline, switched to RP and noticed a difference in the way the tranny felt.

^^ Really??? I've read that the 2 are about comprable.

Switching from redline to rp smoothed out the tranny and eliminated more grinding? Could be good to know as tranny fluid doesn't last forever...

OK. My 06 TC is bone stock. Took it in for 30k service, and all of a sudden 3rd gear grinds on upshift and downshift. Started out doin it for the first ten or fifteen minutes after starting it. Now it grinds for like a half an hour or more. That little annoying grind you are all talking about in second, mine does in third. What the hell. Anyway, not tryin any other fluid. I don't want to disguise the problem. Brought it to dealer today and said I don't want it back until it's fixed. They better swap it out.

Royal Purple doesn't cure anything,

I have Royal Purple and had it for almost 1 year. I changed my transmission fluid to Royal Purple to see if it will cure the grinding synchro and the gear noise. After changing the fluid, everything was fine until I came up to Rochester, NY (college at RIT) and when winter season came, the 2nd and 3rd gear grind easily when its cold. When its warm up, everything is fine.

I've travel from Texas to New York many times and this time will be my last time to bring my car to New York because my car is an 06 and i put like almost 56k miles on it so I'm going to get a 4x4 truck to use in the snow in Rochester, NY and leave my tC in Texas. Anyways, I did use Royal Purple in like more than 20k miles on it. Now I'm back in Rochester, NY, the cold weather came again and now my 3rd gear grinds when its cold when up-shift and down-shift or downshift when turning while my clutch all the way to the floor. I have to down-shift slowly to 3rd gear when the rpm is below 3500 sometimes but most of the time, I have to down-shift slowly. I think the tC manual transmission have weak synchro...

My opinion is I don't think any transmission fluid will cure anything like Royal Purple says, it'll cure the gear noise but it didn't.

Don't get me wrong, I love Royal Purple, I even use Royal Purple Engine Oil all the time but it just that, they could have done better for the transmission.

I was wondering how much will it cost to rebuild one or replace synchro myself? Thinking about putting LSD when I'm in the process of taking the transmission apart.

hmm... another 06 tC transmission problem like mine but grinding for like half an hour or more? $#!T, the synchro should be bald by now on the 3rd gear.... it might be the common problem for 06 tC....

You wrote all that because I suggested going to RP... The stock tranny can withstand 500+hp of abuse if you drive it right... We have an 06 as well. 5th gear went out completely while I was racing one time. Tranny lasted for a while and the tC is boosted (interesting how it happens with stock tC's though). Called around to see how much to replace the synchro's. It cost just more than buying a used tranny. So, that's what I did. Used 2005 tranny with 25 miles on it. Dropped it in myself, and was done with it.

So, now we have an 05 tranny in an 06 tC.
