Default Shifter Assembly Question

My friend and I were installing my CC short shifter today and it went fairly smoothly. Just one problem, we noticed after we had the assembly back together that the shifter was having trouble with left right movement. Upon further investigation we discovered that on the left side of the assembly behind the spring peice there was a small peice of plastic pertruding out with a small black bushing on it. This peice had snapped off along the install process and was jamed. We were able to get it out and the car seems to shift perfectly. My only concern is not knowing what purpose that "nubbin" served.. We thought it might have been to stablize the shifter or something.. I notice a small amount of left right play in the shifter while in gear but nothing out of the ordinary -- about the same amount as in my buddy's s2k..

This is the nubbin:

Any ideas?

Just stretch the right side of the spring over the white bump. Slide it back on, wiggle it around..you'll see how it works then.

You wont be able to change gears.. Take it apart again, and play around with it, you'll see its purpose.

We must be talking about a different peice. The shifter works perfectly.

That's the stationary point for the spring on the assembly. One of each legs that extends from the spring's coil is supposed to rest on each side of it. The spring uses this as an anchor on the assembly so one side of it gets spread apart from the stationary point on the assembly while moving the shifter from side to side, causing the shifter to want to go back to the neutral resting position. Without it you'll probably notice less resistance for side to side movement, and probably some play. Is the spring resting on any part of it right now or did it completely break off?

That makes perfect sense, I did notice that the shifter doesn't spring back to neutral as quickly as it did before and was wondering if this had something to do with it. No, it completely broke off, seemed that while the bushing was thick the actual peice of plastic was very thin so I'm not surprised it snapped off. Do you see any long term ramifications from not having it? I was thinking about drilling a small hole and using a tiny machine bolt to replace it.

Thanks for clearing this up!

I think that putting a bolt in it's place would be a good idea, or crazy gluing the tab back in place. You probably would not have any long term issues by not having it there, but trying to fix it would be the way to go. This would bring the feel back to stock and the shifter would spring back to neutral like it's supposed to.

Hopr this helps,

Kevin
