ummm i would not keep that on the car too long. As PVC pipe heats up and it will melt in a gaseous state. The gas is highly toxic.

it was an awesome idea though, you just designed an intake that Injen sells for $250 lol. I bet materials cost you no more than $40

much props on the AWESOME job!!!
I actually wouldn't mind that in my ride... i mean the "straightness" of the pipe makes it look very professional. and the color is just that much better.

i would slap the professor if he/she doesn't give you A+

Thanks guys.

It works really well actually. My butt dyno tells me that it freed more power through out the powerband than my WR sri.

I'm taking it off Wednesday after my presentation. I know that the part won't last, but it was really fun to make.

They are very correct about PVC + heat = bad. The Navy has banned PVC insulation from being used in aircraft for several reasons. First, it has a melt point of 80C ~176F, and is not reccommended for use above 70C ~ 158F. In manned environments, when heated it can outgas and release chlorine vapor. Upon further thermal degradation, it eventually becomes HCl gas, which when mixed with water vapor in the air becomes hydrochloric acid vapor, bad for pretty much everything, especially electronics. If it happens to burn, the smoke vapor is dense, obscuring visibility, and is also toxic.

Here's the thermogravametric analysis (TGA)

You can see the HCl formation at 263 C. It probably won't be an issue being away from the exhaust manifold and staying cooled by the intake air, but a very poor long term candidate. ETFE or Tefzel is much more appropriate of an engine environment if you are looking for a non-heat conducting intake, or of course silicone as Perrin uses.

yeah, props on your project. looks good an custom.

only one word of advice, your pcv breather tube dumps really close to your MAF sensor, you are really running the risk of fouling up the sensor, which would not be a good thing.

just run the breather hose to a ventilated catch can and you'll be fine.

yeah, and plus, pvc is susceptible to extreme weather conditions, ie. if its really cold out, and you start running the car, the difference in temps could crack the pvc pipe, especially at the fittings, since the pipe expands and contracts.

just wondering what size PVC you used? and yes i have seen all the warnings, i just kinda wanted to build one for the fun of it also. Couldnt we just use the same type of PVC used to run hot water, instead of regular PVC?

I think the whole point here was that this was a school project for a grade and the use of materials was not of chief concern but the design was!!!....... I'm sure when he has his degree and is an Automotive engineer he WILL NOT use pvc ..... great work man looks awesome Im sure grade will reflect it
