Default Stock Intake box mod

I first removed the 2nd air filter and replaced the regular one with a drop-in K&N. then I pulled off the pipe off the intake side of the box and made the hole in the side of the box bigger. I am very pleased with the results! Not a huge HP gain, but I really like the sound on the intake side when I go full throttle! Even just removing the tube off the box make it sound better!

First pic is of the bottom of the air box where I opend the airway a little.

This pic is of the stock air tube, It makes a bad curve, and it gets smaller tward the end... also it is so shot that the temp change 6" away cant be worth the restrictive design... (In my opnion...)

nice work. that mod is equivalent to a short ram or that umnitza CF intake.
last year i swiss cheesed that same area of my airbox (drilled holes instead of one big openning) and used a K&N panel filter. watercooled VW guys (i used to be one) have been doing it for years. power gains are negliable.

examples of swiss cheesing on VW's:
Good:

Bad:

This guy swissed the top half of the box. LOL.

DIY CAI/airbox mod (for MK3 VW, but you'll get the point)

Most likely you lost a tiny amount of power, just by drawing warmer air in. No CAI is going to provide you with a noticeable gain either. So you may as well just buy for looks and sound.

Actually the K&N drop in filter showed in the dyno loss of hp. I remember seeing the Dyno somewhere around here.

i did this but with a few small holes in the bottom of the intake (where the cooler air will be) i first made 4 but it sucked out too much bottom end so I covered up one hole so I could have a nice mix of lowend trq and a little gain on the upper rpms... not bad for free

gas mileage is around 28-29mpg average now too

The K&N showed a loss of about 1hp. Seeing as the margin of error for a dyno is 3 or 4 times that, I wouldn't listen to that figure too much.

Show me timeslips where a drop-in slowed the car down, and I'll throw mine away. I've already seen timeslips where full CAIs slowed the car down, so there's no need to fool with those.

d sport mag is doing project tc, they showed loss of horse power and torque with the fujita cai and magnaflow axle back installed one at a time and then put on the dyno. thier power came after the 4-1 header install, it gave close to 17whp all parts joined together. next month they install ground wire kit and other electric toys, you can still find this months issue on shelfs ohh and its a flint mica if it matters

No more sick than people starting new threads sporting the "power" of their new intakes. He posted some info, I posted correct information regarding it. If you dont like it... well... I could care less

I am not bashing what he did. If he likes it that is great.
