Throttle Body Cleaning
UH....TAKE ME TO TECH AND DIY FOR SCION TC 1G PLEASE, MY BAD!
Someone asked if I knew how to clean the tC throttle body, so I thought I would make a how to/do it yourself next time I did one at home.
On the tC, dirty throttle body usually causes rough idle problems or stumbling from a normal take off, and in some number of cases check engine light for running too rich since less air is passing to the engine versus a clean and normally operating throttle body.
This was done on a 2009 tC at 44,700 miles.
Tools needed;
-Philips head screw driver (PH2)
-Large pliers
-10 mm socket and driver or socket wrench
-Clean shop rag (make sure it doesn't tear apart easily)
-Toyota Throttle Plate Cleaner or sufficient
First you want to make sure you have the ignition off since the ecm will hold the throttle plate closed when you try to open it manually.
This tC idled low at about 450-550 and when taking off or just cruising at 30 mph it would stumble a litle sometimes. Air/Fuel ratios would dip into 13s and sometimes touch 12s at idle and was more variable than normal setting a check engine light code P0172 system too rich (Bank 1).
It is recommended that you unplug the battery from the terminal before you begin any work any vehicle, it is for safety and to prevent any damage. Though in my case, I didn't.
We will be removing the intake piping that you see in the center.
-First using a 10 mm socket, remove the plastic valve cover from the aluminum valve cover.
-Next remove the ventilation tube that connects the aluminum valve cover to the intake piping from the valve cover side. Then unhook the small intake tubing that is on the intake piping running to the intake manifold.
-Use a philips head screw driver to remove the intake piping near the air box and a large set of pliers or your fingers at the throttle body side. Just make sure you squeeze the clips together and pull up on the piping simultaneously. Be careful not to let anything get through the throttle plate, as engine damage may result.
-Throttle body before; it's hard to notice any dirt or accumulation until you push open the throttle plate.
-The official throttle plate cleaner from Toyota
-Using the tube attached to the can, spray sparingly while holding the throttle plate open one side at a time and use a clean shop rag to wipe it clean. Make sure to use a clean portion of the rag with every wipe Be careful, the throttle plate can cut you without much force. (Left side somewhat cleaned, right side dirty)
-Repeat with other side and it should end up looking like this.
-Put everything back together checking to make sure everything is back together properly and snug. Also remember to remove any foreign objects from the engine bay.
-Start the car; you may notice that it will take longer to start. Lightly press the throttle to clean out any remaining throttle plate cleaner and contaminants. Allow car to idle for a few mintues. Idle may climb and stay a little higher than normal for several minutes even after engine has reached normal operating temperature.
-Drive around normally for a few minutes and return to idle. Everything should return to normal operating parameters.
-Clear check engine light using appropriate OBD-II scan tool
