Default throttle lag...?!?!?!

I dont know if anyone is having or has had this problem but when shifting into 3rd and getting on the gas... my rpm's reach 3k and then climb to 4-5k before the power kicks in and lets the car take off... but it also does it from 3-4th gear and after driving in 5th gear at 70mph and then gassing it it climbs to like 6 k before it kicks in so im thinkin its my clutch but i have no play in my clutch pedal and its not squishy or anything and the sinkros seem fine so im quite confused wtf the problem is.... praying its not the clutch.... so if anyone knows what the deal is please get back to me asap it would be much appreciated!!! thanks!

Uh oh, I think your muffler bearing is about worn out. Thats what it sounds like to me any how.....

No for real though its normal. Dont worry about it. Try not to slip your clutch as much and you will be fine.

Upon further reading though you say when you floor it in 5th it slips up to 6 grand before it moves any where? If thats the case time for a new clutch!

A couple of suggestions based on what you are describing:

First, I would take your car into the dealer (if you're under 100K miles, they should check it for free and let you know whether you need a clutch.) To that point, if your clutch is slipping, you would notice it when you accelerate from a dead stop. If the clutch is going, then it should slip when you apply torque under acceleration. A simple test is to stand on the brake and let the clutch out slowly. If the revs drop, you probably don't have a bad clutch.

Second thing is, based on your post, you may be experiencing a situation where you are not hitting the right shift points given the VVT-i systems behavior under hard acceleration. This variable val;ve timing system will cause a big surge in power when the engine exceeds 3K RPM under hard acceleration. If you are not timing your shift points in the RPM range to coincide with the VVT-i kicking in aggressive spark advance and valve duration, this could give you a similar experience to what your describing.

Start with taking it to the dealer to be sure you don't have something going on with the drive train.

^x2 I think it is just shift timing... let the rpms get a bit higher before moving on to the next gear

After driving it a while like that.. do you smell anyting? A slipping clutch that is that bad will usually let you know with a nice smell

VVTI does zero for valve duration. And there really isnt a "Surge" at 3k. It is not VTEC. It is a constantly variable valve timing adjustment that affects valve overlap. There is no change in duration.

If the engine revs up, but the car doesnt speed up the only thing it can be is the clutch. The rear wheels HAVE to speed up with the engine, regardless of valve timing.

If what you are saying is true when you shift, then it should rev up, not pulling, then the rpm should drop as the car begins to pull due to the clutch biting.

The standing on the brake is ok.. but not the best test. Start driving at about 20 mph and put the car into 4th gear. Let out the clutch and put the gas down. It should bog like hell, but not rev up. That is a much better test. Even with a slipping clutch, it will slow the engine down with the brake applied, just not as much as with a good clutch. The test I just mentioned will point out a slipping clutch a lot better.

yeah... ive asked around to all my super mechanically gifted friends and they all pretty much say its my clutch... i have no problems with my shift points... i know how to drive...lol! but as far as the dealer goes... flordia sux cause the dealers actually charge you to look at the problem cause they have to tear down the tranny... and if you decide not to have them fix it ... put it back together which would cost me another 500 dollars on top of the parts... so i'm kinda ____ed atm... anyone know where i can get a DIY for the clutch replacement? and thanks for replying... i didnt expect to get so much feed back!!! thanks!

Do you have a place to do it? Replacing the clutch is not exactly a quick DIY job and is more of a pain on a FWD. Its not the most hard job in the world if you have done this type of work before, but it isnt a quick driveway job either. If it is truly a slipping clutch, it is easy to tell. There is a flywheel install DIY on yoursciontc.com. That will get you everything you need.

No problem, glad you got it figured out. By looking and by reading others experiences with it, I dont think getting to the clutch will be too tough on this one. Not a light job by any means, but easier than some. There is a good amount of room to work with on the tC at least.
