Default Transmission ideas!!!

This idea cam t me the other when I was getting a quote for my dsm tranny. Almost all of the gears used to change ratios in DSms are from evoIII trannys. So i'm wondering if its possible to swap like a 2az camry 5th gear to lower rpms fro highway cruising. I can almost guarantee that this can be i just don't have the resources to pull parts numbers and gear ratios of all these cars to find something to try.

man.. its crazy you posted this bc i was just thinking about it myself! i had a dsm as well (97gsx...hence my screen name) and i had my dsm trans fully built and added a longer 2nd and 3rd gear! with the tc, i'm sure there is something that would work...its just whos got the ***** to try it out..lol. i'm more concerned with beefing it up, and making it bullet proof like my dsm tranny was. i went thru 3 tans in my eclipse, and finally shelled out the money to have one built to handle what my car was putting down (511whp) and i never again had an issue with the tras. i was at the 1/4 mile track EVERY weekend, and sometimes tues nights too since that was the test and tune night! i beat the ____e out of that car tho

I know i wish I had a toyota microfiche or something. there has to be something you can do. I mean even on my pitbike i swapped the primary gears out t have a higher top speed after I built the motor granted thats way easier.

I'm sure it will only be a matter of time before built trans are available for the tc. the stock form has been proven to hold 500+whp on the dyno and I haven't seen to many of them run down the track, but I'll tell you right now... I break a tranny with in the first month of my cat being completed.. lol. I'm all about going out to the track.

Well finally got around to doing some research. An 07 camry has a slightly taller 5th gear at .731 rather the tc's .775. Although its not a huge diffenrence I bet it would still be nice to drop some rpm's off at 65mph highway speeds.

the main difference is the camry's final drive ratio. ours is 4.29:1 and theirs is 3.94:1, this allows us to take off faster but suffer with highway mileage

The 5th gear should still help though, correct?

somebody should just try to bolt on a whole camry tranny and see how it works on the tc, especially a boosted tc

Maybe I am just stupid ... but why is it not possible for us to just swap the tranny from the Camry? Is it possible but just no one has completed it, or are there other factors that dont allow for it?

yes, it would. IMO the gearing is fine until 5th. I would like a taller overdrive but still want the low gearing for acceleration. A gear even taller than the camry's 5th would be better i think

Definately agree with you on a taller gear than the camry, but my whole deal is trying to be cost effective. I really wanna go order the gear from dealer and swap it out.

If someone is gonna make this happen...possibly a kit or a swap, they should have an NA version and a Turbo version...the NA being just changing out the 5th gear ratio and leaving the final drive and the Turbo version changing both!

yeah to hell with saving mileage, I'd like to get some taller gears in there to realize some speed. what the hell is the point of me dropping 4 large into my car on a supercharger and go kart suspension to get 300 hp if I can only go 120 mph? with 300 hp I want to go to buttonwillow and hit 160 on the back straight! what does chris rado's cup car use?

well to answer my own question he uses a lenco setup with planetary gears. hugely troublesome and CRAZY expensive, but if you can get it to fit and work you get to choose each of your drive ratios, which is sick!!
