Default TRD Cold Air Intake. . .

hey all,

Just installed a TRD CAI on my '06 tC and the pressure sensor is making this annoying loud CLICK, CLACK when the car starts. I took it to the Toyota dealer and one of the techs said it was normal.
I have never heard of this noise on any cars with any intakes, short or cold, before. Anyone heard or have this problem? Much appreciated.

completely normal. Its coming from the vsv like squall stated. The reason why you didn't hear it before was because it was attached to a ruber mount on the factor intake which lessened the noise. now you have it attached to a metal tube which in turn creates a louder noise. I have the injen and the same thing happens. You will learn to tone it out soon enough.

Since you got the TRD CAI, how was it? Do you like it? Feel any gain? I want the TRD CAI badly but I have to wait til summer (tight budget)

Default TRD CAI. . .

the noise from the sensor bothers me too much to notice. i did have an Ingen CAI installed before replacing it with the TRD CAI and i did not have nay noise issues besides the obvious air being sucked in.

my friend, you will definetly FEEL the difference when replacing your stock intake. you will not drive in the same manner anymore. maybe it's better to wait.

If you don't mind my asking... why did you change out your Injen CAI with the TRD? The noise aside, which do you prefer and why?

ya i don't hear any extra noise with the injen cai. why would you switch to the TRD intake? it's said to provide no power gain where the Injen intake is HP proven

Default TRD CAI. ...

okay, after 2 days the noise has receded a bit. . not as loud and not as often. the sensor should only sound off if the air pressure isn't stable. . ..so there must be something hindering the air flow. i will let u know if i solve this.

as mentioned before, i never had this problem with the Ingen CAI or intake in my previous civic. if u think this is normal, i guess u can live with it. i just can not.

to answer precvious CAI Q's: the brand of the intake doesn't really matter.. .they all do there job just fine. installing a HEADER makes more of a difference so you don't need to spend top $$ on an intake.

I thought the TRD retails for more than the Injen (by like $100).. last I checked (i've been shopping for my own). Are you saying that if you add a header, you can skimp on the type of intake you install? Why's that?

I know most CAI do their job the same but I love the TRD looks and the badge on it so this is why I'm going to get TRD CAI

All depends on what you want to do. If you get a header you will also have to spend $$ on exhaust because your car will be much louder and raspy now if you keep the stock exhaust.

For intake, you've got choices too. If you just want it for looks and sound you can buy cheap off eBay. Or do Dr. Isotope's Ghetto Fabulous Intake (GFI), which is a mod of your existing airbox. There's also a company called Spectre that has a modular DIY system, in fact Dr. I uses some of their pieces.

For max power gains - and they really aren't a lot with any intake - I would recommend the Injen. Got mine for $240 last year and I think that's still about the going price. The GSC intake round-up dyno showed a peak gain of +8 HP (on a car with a header) and I didn't notice any loss in low end either. The other intakes tested had lower gains and some are reputed to break the bracket mount. Have not seen a dyno of TRD/AEM so can't recommend them.

For max gains you would upgrade intake, header, and exhaust - depends on how much you want to spend. Either way take your time and research before you buy.

Thanks for the info tC-risis, very informative. I think, just for now I'm going to get the Injen CAI & a reputable cat-back system (leaning towards Skunk2 or Agency Power). For my daily driver, non-track car, I think that'll be enough for a nice sounding ride with modest gain in hp over the powerband.. not planning on beating a 350Z off the line yet.

I'll get the TRD CAI in May or June and will try to take it to Dyno and see how much gain it is.

Default TRD CAI intake. . .

ok, i figured out the damn problem MYSELF!
true, the vsv does make the clicking noise, but i should NOT be able to hear from INSIDE my cabin. i took my tools out and a closer look revealed the flange and it was loose. . . .tightened it and my baby PURRRRRS like i'm accustomed to. . . nice and quiet. . . with the exception of the roar off the CAI. the vsv sensor goes crazy loud when there's an unstable air flow. problem solved. thanx all that helped out.

there are some things you just have to install YOURSELF. . ..damn dealer tech.

don't mean to threadjack, but i know that removing the two side vents on the front bumper will probably not let more air in or gaining horsepower from the cold air intake, but how do you remove it? can i pry it out or do i have to remove the front bumper and get access to it from the inside? thanks.
