Default TRD / Quaife LSD Install pics

I wanted to post these pics up sooner, but never got around to doing so until now. I've had the LSD since June 07, but never had time to begin the project until a couple weeks ago.

A big thanks to Garage1727 for the spare manual tranny and scone for the LSD!!

picture quality isn't the greatest since I took them with my phone.

Here's the LSD...

A view of the tranny with pan taken off. Oh, and the thing in the rear is a GSR tranny.

A couple of internal shots

Pic of the stock differential on the final drive gear

And here's the TRD / Quaife LSD properly torqued down on the gear

----------------------------------------------------------

I worked on it more this past weekend. picked up and installed new speedo gear, got the bearings pressed on, etc and everything is pretty much finished. just gotta apply the
Toyota seal, C-rings, oil pan, and some other minor steps. I thought i took more pics this weekend, but i can't seem to find them. I'll try to post more pics later.

New clutch should be delivered by this week...flywheel has been waiting to be installed...tranny project is almost complete!!

install was free since i did most of the work with the help of a very good friend who owns a shop in the Philly area and has all the necessary tools.

install time...hmm...not really sure since i worked on it mostly during the weekends because i travel for work during the week. there was a lot of down time because i did not have the Toyota Special Service Tools (SST) and didn't want to pay over $2000 for them (quote i got from http://toyota.spx.com). we created our own tools, which worked perfectly fine; nothing was damaged and worked like it should.

we saved A LOT of time by not having to remove all the gears and the input shaft and output shaft.

off the top of my head, from the moment we took off the tranny oil pan to the point where i have to apply the seal...i'd say almost a month (including the down time mentioned above). i know that's a long time, but having to make the tools and my limited time to work on the tranny kinda dragged this whole process out.

now that we have the custom tools made and have experience with installing it on the tC tranny, i would venture to guess that the LSD install would only take a couple days if everything goes smoothly...

i'm planning to apply the seal this Friday and try to finish everything up by Sunday. which means install will probably be done next weekend or so...my new clutch won't be delivered until Oct 1. i'll keep everyone posted.

-----------------------------------------------------

To anyone interested:

My friend is considering to do TRD LSD installations for the tC for a price. If you are interested, please let me know.

but i'm guessin most will wait to see how mine turns out first...

install time is probably around 3 hours if you have the tools for the job (not the toyota ones) and the parts needed for the install and the tranny sitting on the table.

It is actually pretty easy but any front wheel drive tranny is after rebuilding a few saturn trannies.

the tools to take this apart can be pieced together from any tool truck (matco, snap pn, mak or SK).

i would say that the diff weighs somewhere around 20 LBS but i maybe wrong.

by the way if you ever do this yourself make sure you get the new seals and bearings and the shims that you will need from toyota. you wont know what size shims to buy until you need them. Kind of stupid but owell.

Did you replace any worn parts like syncros? I plan doing the same thing and replacing any worn internals.

forgot about this thread...

anywho, the transmission was practically new when i bought it. only about 1000 miles on it if i recall correctly. internal parts were inspected and nothing was out of place or broken. everything looked pretty new!

just to give an update:

it's been a little over 4 months since the install and everything seems to be fine. i installed a ZPI lightweight flywheel and ACT 6 puck clutch kit at the same time. after a month or 2, i started to get a loud tapping, clatter/chatter noise during idle. looking into what this is, but so far all things point to a lightweight flywheel and/or clutch problem. i'm hoping to have some time this weekend to take a look.
