About the 4G63....

No way... those things are only as great as a domestic iron block (which are pretty badass.) The strength of those engines lie in their simple designs. Cast iron closed deck blocks are great for turbocharging and that's all there is to it. I would say the F20 ranks the best as hp/liter N/A shows technological prowess. Had F1 not put a ban on oval shaped pistons, whatever engine Honda came out with those pistons would be the greatest.

Basically, imo, anything F1 derived is going to be the best since historically, F1 has been a show case of technology with the express purpose of trickling down into production cars. Unfortunately, due to the thousands of bans put onto F1 cars now, we don't get very much F1 techno-trickle down.

why is this thread called v-tec vs vvti?

Shouldnt it be called i-VTEC vs. VVTL-i?

we are comparing apples and oranges here. we all know apples are better!

I would guess it's because the OP didn't know any better. He said he was a bit of a noob, so it's excuseable imo.

If we're on the greatest 4 cyls ever...the two best that I've ever driven are the 4G63 and the SR20DE.

smart man;)
on the flip side, the greatest strength of having a high compress engine is also the greatest weakness
risk of a blown motor
honda knew what people were gonna do to it when they made it that why its made the way it is. but the mitsu 4g63(? evo engine) is propbaly the greatest historicaly. 14yrs and never changed other then tuning and addons.
Considering that maybe the 4g63 will be no more when the EVO X comes. I think. I saw somewhere that they would stop preduction on this engine.

How about the F20C? Wouldnt that be in the top 3 best NA 4 cylinder motors built?
you'd be surprise how long these engines can last being unmodded with just normal wear/tear
its just really rare to find a virgin rsx nowadays

yeah, that would be more accurate...... or DOHC VTEC vs. VVTL-i. What really sucked for 01+ Celica GT-S was the damn gearing and altered ECU.

yes, key word there is unmodified (meaning no valvetrain or internal work). I know those motors can take the abuse though! I actually see many RSX not modified.... Type S is another story.

I asked a question similar to this awhile ago when I first got my tC. I was hoping to get K20 performance out of the 2AZ engine but after some education I understood why it's not possible. (At least the N/A route.)

Here's the thread

oh yes, almost forgot about the SR20.... there have been many good NA 4 cylinder engines in the past. Off the top of my head there is B16B, B18C5, SR20DE, 3S-GE, H22A, 4AG (AE111 20V) anymore from the past?

Here's the thread
humm... quite simple actually
2 different engines aiming for different things

k20a, k20a2, k20z1, k20z3 are all high compressed motors (very rev happy)
they adapt to bolt-ons very very well but being forced fed can be very dangerous

k20a3 are lower compressed (available in ep3 and base model rsx) similar to the tC
they don't get as much gains from bolt-ons compared to the other k motors however, they have a very strong platform and handle boost very well

this is on average---
a high compressed k-motor with an intake/race header/exhaust/street tune can put us around 205-215 whp
i have yet to see a NA stock block tC at that amount
if you want high numbers feed your ride some spool, whine, or funny gas
