FYI, to save you some time, you can swap 5th gear out on the tranny without actually pulling the tranny. And it can be done in under 2 hrs.

Nah sorry - I meant to kind of write one up with pics but didnt get a chance. I guess I could do a writeup if you like.

It basically involves jacking up the driver side of the car. Removing the driver side wheel and the plastic liner between the wheel and tranny. You than remove the pan on the back of the tranny. Once you have this off, you can see the entire 5th gear assembly, and basically just swap everything over. Oh and if the synchro/hub assy falls apart its a 2-3 hr job, if you manage to put it on/take it off without it falling apart its prob a 1-2 hr job lol.

That thing is a PITA to put together if it falls apart. Oh and FWIW there should be no need to remove the assembly on the output shaft, just leave it all together, what you need to replace is all on the input shaft.

Youll also need to remove the shift fork and youll need a harmonic balancer removal kit to pull the gear off - you can rent one of these from autozone.

I lucked out. I pulled the transmission pan off and started to inspect things. Had some light metal shaveings and my fluid was burnt fluid had less than 5000 miles on it. Noticed that the nut on the gears had backed off about 1/4in tightined it back up annnnnd 5th gear works like a freakin charm and some other minor problems went away like the 3rd gear grind as well as getting stuck in first gear. So if you guys are having issues with ur trans take off you trans oil pan and check all the nut and make sure they are tight. May save you some cash.

is this the nut you're talking about? I'm having a clunking noise on 5th gear but i really don't know if this nut is supposed to be tight or not.
