Is there any new updates on this? I would like to see some pics on what the shafts look like.

this mod can be done in the car. however the chain removal is a moot point because our balance shafts are gear driven off of the crankshaft between the 2nd and 3rd cylinder. i would not however recommend doing this yourself. Because there are many things that can go wrong if it is not done correctly . I have done this mod to my motor . but my motor is still outta the car .......so no results as of yet sorry.

Correcto! I am getting around this on new motor by just using Brian Crower's Stroker kit which in all likelihood will eliminate that gear on the crank. I will remove the balance shafts as well to cut down weight. Not sure if people who are not building the motor will get much benefit to doing this mod though.

Guru or someone, could you please post pics of under the oil pan, or the balance shafts by them selfs, anything would be cool..I took these out on my 03 focus zx3 duratec engine and at the track it knocked off 2 tenths in the quarter. Plus at high rpm's like around 4000 and up the engine felt much much smoother. These things are only in there to make it idle smooth nothing else. Dead weight!

Seems like ZPI is the only one that has done this. I talked to one of them at zpi can't remember who but they said to basically drop the oil pan unbolt the balance shafts. They ride off a gear in the middle off the crankshaft. When i did the removal on my 2.3 ford focus it was basically the same thing except there was a oil hole that went into the cas of the balance shafts. I had to plug the hole with a bolt plug. If i didn't plug the hole, the motor would lose oil presure at the top.

the balance shaft assembly is easy to remove with the oil pan off you just gotta figure out how to plug the holes

^^^ Yea, if its like the balance shafts that were on my 2.3 focus engine there was one oil drain hole that i had to plug up. I used a bolt cap thing i got at the hardware store. You just tap it in the hole and plug it up.

you can do this mod very easily but it is kinda useless if you dont remove the crank and have the gear on the crank machined off. that is were the most reciprocating weight is which would be the biggest spot to free up horsepower. The gear has to be machined of since it is part of the crank and i would only take it to a person that is very familiar with crank grinding and that may not be very cheap.

If I had to take the crank of, I would go ahead and take out the motor and fully balance it. Why machine the crank to balance it when the weight of the pistons and rods are still different. I prefer to do the whole process. Just to have FUN!
