Lately when my car is at idle i can hear loud rattling/churning noises coming from the bearing housing on the shaft. I just had the shaft/bearings replaced by Gompka but it sounds like bearings are going again.

Is anyone on here able to help me replace the bearings on the s/c shaft? I can get the shaft off the car no problem. As for tools after that point, i don't think i have.

Replied to your email, just need a few basic tools, a couple blocks of wood and a 2lb hammer.

Also, when putting the shaft housing back together, make sure the shaft is spinning easily and there is no pressure on the back side of the housing on the bearings. Sometimes you need to omit/or sand down the aluminum spacer ring back there.

Other than that, it is what it is, the bearings are the weakest link in this design. If you have a header or drive on the highway at sustained speeds for long periods of time it will put extra stress on the bearings.

 

Wher are you located, did you add a grease fitting when you replaced it? This makes a big difference on those bearings.

 

I'm in Orange County CA, Gompka put a grease fitting on there for me on the bearing housing. I probably gave it two pumps of the red high-temp grease after installing it back in. Driven about 2000 miles until the bearing noise problem arose again.

I spun the pulley manually and the bearings inside sound generally smooth. I did notice sideways play on the pulley with bolt tightened which made a knocking noise. I assumed the belt should hold it down tight enough it won't move. Should I add spacers so the pulley does not move? Add spacers to the inside or outside of pulley?

 

Hi all, sorry for this thread. Turns our problem was the play on the pulley. I added washers to reduce pulley movement and the knocking grinding noise went away! Gompkas sc shaft still awesome!!
