DIY: GReddy e-Manage Support Tool Cable

DIY: GReddy e-Manage Support Tool Cable
After trying to find just the cable for the e-Manage to laptop, I found that you have to buy the whole support tool to get the cable, which makes it well over $100. In my attempts I ran across a do it yourself for the cable, and thought I would upload it for everyone else that may be trying to save a dime.
It should be noted that I did not originally write this DIY, take no credit for the work, and no responsibility for what it may do to your e-Manage if you don't know what you're doing. Proceed at your own risk. Yes it does work, and yes it's incredibly easy to make.
Things you'll needed:
Nokia-DKU 5 USB cable(and software driver)- I found mine on eBay for around 8 bucks shipped
Generic USB Cable
Wire strippers
Soldering iron and solder
Heat Shrink
What you'll need to do:
Once you have your Nokia cable you will need to cut off the cell adapter part on the end. Then you will strip the cable to expose the wires (Strip off about 1 inch).
After you have stripped the shielding you will see the shield conductor (silver wires in a woven pattern shielding the other wires).
Twist this shielding to make it into a single wire. There will be some type of aluminum foil surround all the wires now, remove this foil.
Next you will strip the brown wire and solder it to the shielding conductor that you twisted into a single wire. It should look like this:
Next do the same to USB cable by twisting and soldering the Black wire and the shielding together.
Note that what looks to be a huge cluster of stripped wire is actually just the cable shielding.
The next step is to connect the wires together. The wire colors may be different depending what cables you use.
For me I needed to do the following:
Orange from Nokia cable to White on USB cable
Red from Nokia cable to Green on USB cable
Shield/Brown on Nokia cable to Shield/Black on USB cable
Make sure you solder and heat shrink ALL of your connections. We don't want any mishaps.
When you finished test the cable by connecting it from your E-Manage to your laptop and verify that it is working properly.
You will probably have to change the software’s com port to COM3.
After all is said and done, your finished cable should look like this:
Good luck and Happy Tuning!

I've been looking for something like this for awhile. I almost broke down and bought a cable and cut it up just to see how to run the wires.
I should be able to find a cheaper way to make them now that I see this. I'll play around and let everyone know.
BTW, can you hook the e-Manage to a laptop if it's not in the car?

No kidding on the price. It's a tad much for me.
Seeing as how you can download the support tool with some Yahoo searching, and make the cable yourself, instead of spending $100,
you can spend around $15 when all is said and done. I'm not advocating pirating software, but $100 is ridiculous.

It's a don't ask, don't tell policy in this situation. If you know what I mean (to answer your question). Join the group anyways,
since they have updates for the software and firmware for the e-Manage itself. Not to mention a wealth of information on tuning.

No problem at all.
I posted this DIY to help reduce the cost of tuning.Personally,I am trying to save every nickel and dime I can to build my f/i setup, and don't want to have to spend $100+ for tuning software and a cable alone. This stuff gets expensive and every little bit saved helps.

Etsnet is correct. They have rewired it on the inside to make it harder for people to just go out and get a cable.
I'd be interested in seeing what happens if you use a regular usb though.Care to try?

if i can figure out how e-Manage works today, we will finally be able to put some injectors and a map on my buddy's ZPI kit.
He's been untuned for like 5 months!
I'm trying to update it but i get all these errors
