newbie question

you usually get a check engine light because the turbo manifold and downpipe delete the primary catalytic convertor located in the factory exhaust manifold, so the secondary o2 sensor recognizes that the cat is no longer there or working, and triggers a CEL.
other CEL's can be triggered because of bad tunes, running rich, lean, knocking, etc.

i had mine running cel free than when i decided to make my dumped exhaust setup i was too lazy to weld another bung on the pipe i made so i just left that sensor off - no use for it anyways just throws the emissions code for cat not effective or w/e i have a pocket scanner so i just check mine every now and than to make sure thats all there is
every once in awhile ill get a bank 1 rich too but thats pretty normal - sometimes can be avoided if you can get the afr correction dialed in perfectly on the fic
