It won't hurt anything, your gauge would just always be dim.

When the orange wire does not have 12v the gauge will be bright, useful for daytime driving, when the orange wire gets 12v it dims for night time driving so it does not distract you and isn't so bright.
When you have it hooked to switched 12v, which seems to be what crush told you to wire your other gauges to, for power the gauge will always be dim since it is always 12v.
It won't hurt but you're depriving the gauge of its full functionality by not being able to brighten and dim.
In essence the orange wire should be wired to either the headlights, but preferably, the parking lights. I can send you a tC wire schematic if you're unsure of which wire that is.
