Default Release Bearing Analysis

I was having a convo with Syldrin on here the other day about his ACT release bearing and how it crapped out after a short duration of time. Most people are under the consensus that the bearings are different and ACT makes them for their clutches. Well, that's not totally true.

We had a stock release bearing here: Toyo P# 31230-33020. Made in Japan by NSK (stamped on the bearing).

Putting in an ACT clutch for our Alpha Series customer, we had an ACT release bearing P# RB446

Low and behold, this was made by NSK as well in Japan. (stamped on the bearing too).

Apparently, they are made by the same company, but offer differences on the collar of the bearing and base as well.

Just curious, what kinda symptoms you having?? The reason I'm asking is because the only real problem I've ever experienced with my boosted Tc was a clutch master and slave cylinder failure. My Act clutch went in the car at 32k. At 63k pedal stayed on the floor, I went and replaced master cylinder and still didn't like the way it felt so changed slave too. Problem solved, now at 90k its happening again..

I also know someone who had a n/a Tc and way to aggressive of a clutch in it, he had similar problems over and over again. He wasent able to get them to last more then 5k..
Hopefully Paul u may have some thoughts on this.. I'm still surprised I haven't heard of more people with these clutch problems.

You know when you look for a replacement release bearing on the ACT site they call it "Release Bearing Toyota Celica - RB446". This looks like it came from a Celica. I would still just stick with the stock one for the tC.

yep, Chris and I noticed that too when we replaced my comp clutch stage 3 for the act hd. When I compared the act and cc bearings, low and behold the cc clutch used an NSK just like the act. It was still in good shape, but decided to go forward with a stock bearing. The stock has a bigger sleeve, it's a bit more enclosed and it is heavier. Stock it is for me from now on.

^^interesting my buddy with an ACT clutch has the same whining but I'm not sure where that is coming from.

I decided to use my stock bearing when I swapped clutches too.

I do not know much about NSK bearings, but I will look more into this when I get a moment.
