Default S/c Belt/Idler Pulley ( Need Help Asap)

Hey guys,

I have a couple questions for the people who kno, or have an idea. I have a stock S/c system on my 05 Tc Auto, and about 4 months ago it started to make a squeaking noise coming from the pulley side of the S/c. I took it into Longo Toyota and after waiting 6 hours at the dealership, they told me that the bearing for the tensioner was bad and had replaced it. Luckily I was under warranty after a little arguement with the advisor

But now its making the same noise, and Ive taken it to them once already and waited there 3 hours for them to find nothing, luckily they said to leave it there and gave me a rental for free, but they still could not duplicate the noise unlike the last time. Its a 40 min Highway drive to get out there, and after the drive the noise tends to go away.

But now its doing it a little bit more consistently and a little bit louder as well. Is the belt supposed to be centered on all the pulley's without any side to side movement? I popped the hood today to look at it again while it was running and I could see the the idler pulley closest to the firewall had a slight wobble to it, and that the belt was actually moving about a millimeter or so off the pulley, then back on. This shouldn't be normal right?

Should I just fix it myself? or should I try to do the 40 min drive to take it back to them and have them look at it, and waste my time and possibly find nothing? I can get a video of what its doing if it would help. I just want to figure this out soon. Sorry for the long post, I wanted to get alot of detail in to maybe help figure it out.

just fix it yourself man, it will take you an hour. The idler pulley bearing is a 6203 bearing. I recommend Koyo 62032RDC3 they are much better than stock and about $15 a piece.

Definitely not supposed to wobble, get that taken care of asap before the pulley gets permanently damaged from that wobbling.

I would just find a local place that sells bearings and give them that part number. Pretty standard bearing, nothing special.

Hmm.. Ok, Ill have to look around to see if I can find a place that does that. :D Thanks again. And to take out the old bearing would I need any special equipment? or could I basically loosen the tension on the belt, remove the pulley, pop out the bearing, and pop in a new one?

there is a snap ring that holds the bearing in place. Its a pity to take out if you don't have a snap ring tool, but you can do it with two small sharp objects if you hold the pulley in a vise.

Sounds like you need to get the supercharger pulley shimmed. You should ask the toyota dealer that did the install to see if they took the time to shim the s/c pulley properly so the belt is not hanging off any of the idler pulleys while the cars running.

However, even if you don't see the belt hanging off any of the idler pulleys while the car is running, it still might have to be shimmed.

I had this bearing go out on me once, it had nothing to do with the SC pulley shimming. Good thing to check but I wouldn't put money on it being the source.

Make sure the bearing stay lubricated, I found it drying out from from engine bay washing and needing lubing every once in awhile.

yea, improper shimming causes belt shredding issues not pulley wobble.

Ok, on closer inspection today it doesnt look as if the pulley is moving, but you can see the belt still move on the pulley slightly. I also noticed that there are some wear marks that I would assume are normal from 2 surfaces rubbing against each other, it looks like where the belt touches the pulley it is a matte black, and where it doesnt touch is still a gloss black, but I assume thats normal. But one other thing I noticed is that the belt rides right on the edge of the idler pulley's. Not in the center, not closer to the block, but straight even on the edge of the pulley. I can try to post a pic of what Im trying to describe, as well as a video if it would help diagnose the problem any better. Im also gonna try one other store tomorrow to see if they have any kind of bearing that would work.

I saw that on someone else's idler pulley and the installers had put a washer on the wrong side messing up the idler position. That might be the issue, but this does put bad torque on the bearing.

I thought it might. So Ill prob just replace both. Im guessing the shims need to go towards the block side to line it up correctly on the idlers? I dont think I need to touch the SC unit itself do I?

Shims go between the s/c and the s/c pulley, no shims go on the idlers.

Ok, so if the belt is not aligned directly in the middle of the idler pulleys, then it was incorrectly shimmed behind SC pulley, and those shims have to be removed to get the belt dead center? Just wanna make sure before I bust this sucker apart :D

There are some shims that come with the kit, its a trial and error. You add shims until the belt is aligned properly. Its in the s/c instructions, download them from trdsparks.
