Unhappy S/C issue: extremely loud chatter after oil change...

Hi all!

So I changed my oil saturday from 10w40 mobil 1 to 10w40 royal purple and let the car warm up for 10 minutes then went to 711 to grab a drink. Nothing different on the drive there. Driving back, the charger made a EXTREMELY loud chatter noise from the charger around 2k + RPM. I know it normally makes a chatter noise an goes away around 4k RPM but this was a unusually, extremely loud chatting noise. It was so bad that I wanted to stop driving the car. I am only a few minutes away from my house so I drove straight home, opened my hood and the idle noise of the charger was as if it wanted to die. Like how a motor sounded when it wants to die/low compression. I went out and bought mobil 1 10w40...changed the oil again (when the car cooled down). Sounded normal except the whistle noise changed a bit. Drove it again to replicate the situation...went to the store. Turned off car. Went inside...came back out. Started the car up again. Drove down the road and the same thing, extremely loud chatter. Popped the hood @ home again, the idle sounded ok but I can't put my finger on it if its the bearings. There is some slight knocking noise coming from the blower side as well...thinking if something is loose...I can't say for sure.

I did replace the bearings when I rebuilt this thing back in aug. All the bearings, seals, etc...complete rebuild. I found two high speed bearings that were rated 59k RPM when I did the rebuild but otherwise, the rest of the bearings are stock replacements (NGK). An I made sure the wording of the bearings were facing away from the gears during install as well as making sure they are sitting properly.

I haven't had time to pull it out but I didnt drive my car because it seems like the problem occur's after 5 minutes of use and the sound is extremely bad. An this was after a oil change...no issues before hand.

Wondering if anyone came across this odd situation. The bearings are only a few months old in the S/C. Are they destroyed already?

It could just be a coincidence that the bearings went out exactly when you changed the oil. Another thing it could be is something clogging your oil inlet line.

I used compressed air with a small nozzle to blow through the oil inlet line before I did the whole installation but yah possibly. I'll just have to see if its dry when I unhook it. Thanks for the reply!

I wouldn't drive it until you can check everything out, just do it on a weekend. If you need to drive the car just bypass the s/c temporarily.

It is currently down. I am ordering bearings and may modify the oil inlet nozzle a bit, if not replace it. The oil pumps (thank god) when turning over but I read a old topic yesterday about a DIY rebuild of the S/C and its funny when there was a paragraph, based on bearing failure and when I read "could happen after a oil change if the inlet is coked..." I was like, OMG that did happen, unfortunately to me!

when putting on new bearings, is there a recommendation to use grease to grease them up or just pour new oil on them? I am always thinking about this because the first set of bearings I used, I greased the hell out of them with lucas red 'n tacky grease that is a multi-purpose EP grease with a drop point of 540F .

Tough luck, you may have damaged them when installing. The smaller bearings are eaily damaged. Don't use grease but you can soak the bearings in oil if it makes you feel better. I would be afraid of the grease staying thick and clogging something else where in the engine. But like was suggested don't drive it and pull it out to check.
