turbo tC at a track day: Epic fail
First off, NOT MY CAR. My car was a maroon TC. And I was laughing my ___ off taking these photos.
Anyway, I met a dude at a track day this spring who brought his turbo'ed and striped out tC. Usually you have to drive a bit to get to these events, I think he was about 4 hours from his home town. Of course the turbo blew by the second day. So to get home the whole habitrail of intake and exhaust pipes were pulled to go back to stock (sort of) for a 300 mile drive home:
This was the car:

Everything came out and was scavenged:

This was the solution to going back to N/A using just what was available. To have metered air flow and routed exhaust it ended up snorkled. The MAF tube was the tube that dictated this mess. Note that the hood won't close without cutting a hole.

Note the thin aluminum plate being used to hold back hot exhaust gasses for the drive home. If it stays sealed and doesn't burn through...

Another angle on that: About this time the snorkel was tied/braced in place to the strut tower bar with vacuum tube ( at my insistence) to keep it from shaking off.

Time to loose the hood and stick it in the trunk.

The ECU is reset and ready to hit the road. That snorkel is kind of in the way. It also sounded funny, but it ran fine once the ECU piggy back was unplugged. Still this looks unpleasant for four hours of highway driving any way you cut it.

Ironically, I had the exact part to fix it sitting in my closet at home. My old alphaworx headers are for sale BTW.
Also have more pictures of this on my flickr

Why is this funny? The guy had a problem with his car and he did what he had to do to get home.
With what seemed to be available its really not that bad.
What would you have done in that situation?

Sorry dude but kinda gotta agree w/ ^ on this one. We got a lot of Scion love in the PNW if it was me and I was close I would have had him either drive to my house and loan him the header or bring it back and throw it on quick. I think it would have been better to help the guy out and make sure he got home okay than to try to make fun of him doing what he had to do to try and make it home said 300 some miles..
I was also 4 hours away, so that would have been 12 hours of driving to lend the headers (home, back, home). If it had been do-able I would have.
Its not funny @ the failure, but chasing people around with a snorkeled car is. The turbo failure was the final exclamation on a turbo kit that repeatedly never worked right, after several rounds with the vendor. Picture '<Vendor's> turbo kit is so bad I had to drive around like this'.

Really? Funny? Wow your ridiculous. How is someone having a really bad day and having some bad luck at the track funny? Anyways to the op I hope someone puts your business online and laughs at you. Cause that's messed up saying its funny the poor guy went to have some fun and ended with bad luck. Hope the guy comes back stronger.

calm it brosef
FORREALS?! This is the first time signing back into my account in a really long time and I stumble into this?! LOOOOL
First off, is there no trailer around? Wtf? I know plenty of people who blew their SR at the track in the middle of no where. What do we do? We drive out to the closest town that has a u-haul and you rent a trailer....
Second of all, if his setup never worked right, why would you even debate to go track the car? imho, if youre going to turbo your car....do a reliable set up. That setup looked janky as hell.
Third, I cant believe you would even try to drive that home. 4 hours? 300 miles? Id rather leave the car at the track and come back a day later with a trailer.
PS: wheres the striped out tc? Second to last pic shows everything inside the car still...?
Boohoo....its a tc.

agree, wrong forum to hate on a tC owner trying to have fun with his car.

if i were that guy i'd be so ____ed! thankfully he got it to atleast be semi okay to drive home, but damn i feel bad for him!.
but i agree with SoleLaced, the should have just gone and rented a u-haul or gotten a trailer. some one must have had one there.
