Default 2005 TC - Engine Control Unit/Engine Control Module Replacement

Hi, first time posting. I've owned my Scion TC since November of 2004 when i got it as gift for graduating college. It has been a great car, but a problem occurred lately that I need some help with.

Back in June the ABS light, the parking brake light, tire pressure sensor, and door open/close light all came on at once. I figured it was some electrical component error, so i figured i'd look into it later. I travel a lot for work so the car sat unused for 30 days.

The battery died - turns out the issue is those lights coming on are draining the battery since the car had been sitting unused. Toyota checked it out and said the Engine Control Module/Engine Control Unit (your preference in name as it seems to be interchangeable). its pretty expensive (~$1400)

I found replacement parts online for about 75 to 150 dollars depending on the seller. I can pull the current ECU/ECM myself. Can I just swap these if I buy the same part # and spec's (like for auto transmission)?

I don't want to spend the ~1400 and i don't have money for a new car. Can a swap of the same type work or is there more to it than that?

THANKS!
