For all you SQ car audio tC types
Has anyone been able to squeeze in a set of HLCD? I had the pleasure of listening to a set in my buddy's GTI and I think I'm in love. I want to attempt to try this in the tC, but figured I'd ask if anyone had done it yet. If so, what needs to be relocated? Which horn body? Which Compression motor?
trying to gather as much info as I can before I buy something and find out its impossible.
(I know about the knee airbag and plan to make the driver side breakaway fairly easy in the event of a crash)

You also will need some mids that hit and of course sound deadening and probably a mid bass sub or two all running active to get the best over all sound roundness out of it......
if you figure out a place to mount let us know cause i got a set sitting in my closet that i also want to incorporate to my system once i install the second amp and go active......
Right now I got a NINe.5 running my comps, and two free channels, going to use the four chanels bridged and run a set of 6.5" mid subs in the back panels once i figure out a way to glass in a box in the area back there.
Then I got a Nine.4 to run the comps and horns active......
Gotta get some new comps and start making my pods for them though......lol......next year probably before i figure it all out.
I'm on about my 3rd active setup now. Just tore everything out of the car and getting ready to redo. I've got some ID OEM mids or Dayton RS180's (gonna do a listening test to see which I like more). I also got some hybrid Audio Legatia L1V2's in a trade and can't wait to hear these.... These will all be run with 2 PDX 4.100's bridged (plenty of headroom). Haven't decided on a sub. I've got an ED box, but I'm not using that crappy sub it comes with. I'll probably swap out for either an exile slim sub or one of the new RE SL series.... I'm also trying to pick up another H700/H701. I had one and sold it because I didn't think I'd ever use it.
i may try this horn thing too, I'm trying to find someone with some cheap horn bodies w/out motors to see what kind of clearance issues there are and then go from there.

Sounds like you haven't bought any yet, so I'll recommend these;

They also have the horns separate, if you don't need mids or a passive crossover. I think Image Dynamics still makes HLCDs for the car too, so you might want to check them out.
I've got a set of the original Speakerworks/USD horns that I bought back in '91 (almost $300 just for the HLCDs) before they did the roto-mount redesign which makes they much easier to install. Regardless of which horn design you like, any/all of them will need to be modified for a good fit & appearance.
Not sure whether or not I'll ever get them installed in the tC, as the space is so tight down there that I think I'd have trouble shifting...if I had an automatic, I'd definitely find a way to install them. My biggest issue is that I'm still working on making kick panel enclosures for mids, and once complete, there's no way I'll be able to do HLCDs too, as they'd have to be too high at the rear (potentially lowering the soundstage) to fit above the kick panel enclosures.
If you can do it (and I hope you try), the SQ is well worth the cost & effort, HLCD response is just so immediate, being a VERY efficient design. I prefer their sound over domes, ribbons, practically anything & everything.

I had a set of ID CD1pro and Dayton RS180 running active off of as ZAPCO DC1000.4, for a little while. That setup rocked, I had the RS180 BP at 80-1800hz and the HP at 1800hz+. I had the horns attenuated a lot at the amp because 150watts was way to much for them, or actually I would loose my hearing instead. As for room, there wasnt much I have a manual and it got in the way to the point I got rid of them and sold them. But if you want them, go for them!

Oh by the way the CD1pro motors was on the CD1e minibodies, I dont think the full bodies will fit, even with the mini body I had to trim it down a bit without cutting into the throat.
No, don't have time for more forums, and being a DIY audio guy for over 30yrs, there isn't much I'd gain by joining. Was there a specific thread there you were reading regarding HLCDs?
So are you still considering HLCDs? If so, there's a lot more to discuss on the topic here if you'd like.
