Default Bazooka Subwoofer removal ?

I have the Scion bazooka subwoofer installed at the dealership. Now I have problems trying to get at my spare tire. I can't remove that cargo cover with the subwoofer in the way. It seems that the subwoofer is bolted on the right side cargo area.

How do you remove the subwoofer for situations like this?

yea, it's bolted in. 2 bolts. You can still remove the cargo cover with it in, you just gotta work with it a bit. I'd rather do it that way though, its a PITA to take the box out. You gotta remove the sub which is 8 screws, then you have 2 nuts you gotta remove on the inside of the box to unattatch it from the side of the vehicle.

Bolted from the inside?
And removing the speaker for access?

Are you kidding me. This is really not a practical setup.
I just called the dealership to see if they in fact have a TSB on this and they don't unfortunately.

Why would Scion sell a product that interferes with the spare tire access?
I shouldn't have to wrestle out a cargo cover when I do get a flat tire.

Yeah, it's just not the best design. You could cut out some of your liner so it is easier though.

^^ he's not kidding.. you need to remove the subwoofer to access the inside.

why would there be a tsb?

nothing wrong... granted i'll agree the design isn't that great.. but how else do you expect to mount such a box in that way? would you rather not have it connected and have it fly around the trunk area when you drive around?

or perhaps get some bungee cords to hold the box in one spot..

practicality is not a concern at this point... and how often do you need access to the spare? only on emergencies.. and at which point it just takes a little extra time to get to.

Well I figured there might of been a TSB for revisions of the subwoofer design or cargo cover design to correct the problem. When I was trying to get at my spare tire for the first time, I thought the subwoofer was held in place with brackets, wings nuts and clamps. I saw at car shows that the xB and xA scion bazooka woofers are fasten this way for ease of removal. It should be the same way for the tC.
Wondering if it is worth opening a case about this thru Scion.

it's not worth it.

and also with regards to the xB and xA's bazooka placement... i'll say it's very poor. cargo room is sooo sacrificed because of where the factory instructions want you to place it.

but what it ends up being is the customer should've known what they purchased.

I just installed the Bazooka using the factory directions as a guide and realized after I was done the same exact thing - DOH! I am going to go back and cut through the carpet and mdf underneath it so I can lift up that portion of the deck and access the tire. Then there is also the issue of the wasted storage space underneath the bazooka sub that you can't access. I have decided that I am going to cut a couple of slots in the foam so I can pull stuff out of there if I have to.
If anyone has any better ideas before I hack the back of my car up....let me know!

The ED & enclosure is real nice - no doubt. I gave that a lot of thought, but then got a great price on the Bazooka and it won out ....for now. Where did you mount your amp? The thing I liked about the Bazooka is it included the amp in the enclosure. When I get tired of it hogging the corner of my hatch space...I will probably replace it with the ED.

There is also another issue with accessing the right tail light panal if a bulb happens to burn out. Three striking issues about this bazooka design calls for a revision campaign. Only my opinion. I don't have to hassle with it because I don't have one. I thought they are kinda weak subs.

I think the design leaves a lot to be desired. For the inconvenience that it is.....you would think the performance would be better. I will say that I think it is a good match with the stock stereo, but that doesn't say much. The thing that I don't understand is that Scion makes an adequate under-cargo sub that they put in the RS2 and RS3 - why not make that an option for all tC's? Simple solution.

^Maybe those are the ones that will replace the current bazookas in the future for options. The only thing is sacrificed is space to the right of the spare tire. Other than that, its a convenient setup. I also heard those were less powerful.

I have listened to the ED under cargo setup, my bazooka and the RS 2/3 under cargo sub. Each one has it's pros and cons. The ED is very nice...but you have to find someplace to install the amp. The Bazooka surprised me by how good it sounds and feels, but it's a step below the ED and it comes with the hassles mentioned above. On the upside, I picked up the entire setup from Sonic Electronix for around 190 shipped so it's very affordable. I think I read somewhere that the RS under cargo sub has a 35W amp. It's definitely the weakest of the 3, you can hear the bass enhancement....but there is no 'thump' with it at all, very suttle. It does come in a very durable and easily removable assembly though.
I already have some hearing loss from my time in the military.....so a big thumping stereo is definitely something I need to avoid if I want to retain what is left of my hearing. I would have been very happy with the undercargo sub and if they ever release it to the 'rest of us' I will probably go buy one.
