Default Car Audio Newb

Few dumb questions:
Can you run a woofer without an amp off the stock HU?
What is the point of an amp?
Is a 300w 10" sub w/ stealth enclosure worth $205?
What's the difference between S2 Voice Coil and S4 Voice Coil?

And an opinion if ya don't mind.

Single 10" or Dual 10s

&

Small & Sleek or Big & Useful (Plan to run a ps2)

They are links btw

get the Side Mount SQ 10 Enclosure from eD with a Nine.2 and you should be more than happy. You need an amp for the sub. Only way you can get its power. Those cd players are crap, go with Alpine

The stealth box is worth the $205 or whatever it is b/c it's custom fit for our trunk. I hear nothing but good things about eD, so I'm sure it will be top notch.

According to their site, the S2 and S4 voice coils are for 2 ohm or 4 ohm wiring. So your choice there would depend on what amp you choose and how you wire it.

And yes, you need an amp. No head unit that I've ever seen can power a sub on it's own. Dedicated power = better sound.

And I'll 2nd Yank on the head units... look like junk to me. There are a lot better companies out there to choose from. Don't skimp out on something like that b/c they pack a ton of useless features into something that's really cheap.

That 'Small & Sleek' stereo controls look like a RAZR phone!!

Definitely look for better HUs. Alpine, Kenwood, and even Pioneer have better HUs than those POS. :D

Ya, I noticed that too. Can NOT be a good sign for the quality of it if they're trying to sell it based on looking like the phone.

I'd recommend the AVIC-D3 for someone whose not that interested in the highest sound quality. Best bang for the buck you're going to find.

If your budget is under 400 and if you're looking for a single din with tons of sound shaping features, the new Alpine CDA-9887 is worth taking a look at

How does a single din fit in our opening?

Few more dumb questions.
Can I power 2 subs (8" & 10") off 1 amp without loss of sound quality?

Is that worth a damn?
As far as HUs go, I'm not looking for something amazing. Don't need GPS, just need a big screen and would like decent sound quality. Don't really want something I have to mess with alot while driving.

You can power as many subs as you want from one amp as long as your amp is able to power them up. For example my amp is rated at 1200watts @ 1ohm. I could power 4 8" subs with 300watts rms going to each. Or, i could power 2 12" subs with 600watts rms to each. It all depends on how much your amp can dish out, how much power your subs need, and what kind of impedance (ohms) you're looking at.

a double din would look better, but some modifications will be needed if you want the door to close.. i think the same goes for some single dins.. i have the panasonic 6503
i love it.. it was cheap also.. i paid around 400 for a decent screen.. but yes go for a better hu.. those HUs look like someone photochopped a razr phone onto a part of a pioneer HU..

O one of those. I'm looking for one with a screen, but not something with tons of features i'm never really gonna use.

The reason I asked how it would fit is because i thought you meant one like this.

yes that does have a bigger screen but that JVC screen doesn't give you a whole lot more info... tons of useless equalizer graphics and one line of information

Where are you finding these crappy generic HUs?? Spend enough money to get a quality system and you'll be happier. You don't have to buy top of the line... but I would pretty much avoid anything you've posted so far. And probably the site they're selling them on.
