Default Is this a good deal?

This guy from caraudio.com, SM Customs, is gonna build me a sub box for $80 that is:

3/4" MDF
Carpeted Black
.7 cu.ft. NET after driver
Ported @ 30hz

Looks like this:

So, is it a good deal for $80 shipped?

Yes it is. Shipping alone will cost him $20+

If I was to make a box for someone local, I wouldcharg atleast $75.

Ehh, unfortunately today he told me it would be $95 cuz he forgot to add in the carpeting. And I also discovered that the 2" port he would use would NOT give me the results I'm after as far as tuning...

So I gotta go elsewhere

I haven't tried but I'm not really sure how to go about tuning the port... so I didn't know if I should take time to even try :-\

it would be a good deal if he could get a 3" round port 24 inches long in there to get you the 30hz tuning.

I kinda thought that a .77 cu.ft. box with no carpet, ported at 30Hz, smallest dimensions possible, should only cost $80-ish, tops, shipping not included.

or you could do it like it did...

it might not look the best but it was really inexpensive, i think it looks unique, and it sure does sound good.

half of the 24" long port is inside the other half is outside(as you can see)

this was my quick inexpensive way to get exactly what you are looking for. same size, same sub, and tuning and everything.

the box was a sealed box that i got off of ebay(it is a good quality 3/4mdf box).

then i bought the port tubing, flared ends, connectors, and elbows.

then i cut a hole out with a jigsaw and stuck the port in and measured it out and BAM!

i know it might look odd but i'm not the first and only person to use a partially external port.

Did you take a sealed box and use a hole saw to port it? And where did you get them both?

I don't mind your setup at all to be honest. It does look unique

the box was on ebay $30 and the port tubing and end and all was from partsexpress.com, same place i got the sub. all i cared at first was how it sounded. but after getting it all done i don't mind the look at all.

this is the end result...

Hmm... if I ended up going that route... could you help me out by telling me the lengths of port tubing I'd need to make it 30Hz? Cuz I have NO idea how to tune it by my own methods lol.

you'll need to buy one or two pieces of the 3 inch port tubing, 2 flared ends, 1 connector and 2 90 degree elbows.

i'm off for the night(new years party) but i'll be back on in the morning to help ya out if you need me.

and you don't need to send me any money man. lol don't worry about it. forums IMO are here to help others. this is my way of helping.

i'll be back in the morning!

This box doesn't look bad for a DIY port, does it?
